Windows 8

Windows 8 is going on sale starting at midnight tonight. Anybody planning to upgrade?

I'm thinking that I'll upgrade my Vista machine this weekend, see how I like it, and then I might upgrade the wife's machine (Win7). For only $40, it's a cheap update, but I'm still unsure how I'll like the new interface on a non-touchscreen computer.

I am going to upgrade my Vista software.

I am hoping that on an older version XP software I can upgrade using that software. I have a computer sitting at home that has a corrupt XP software on it.

Anyone see any issues with this?

Does it boot up into Windows? I'm not sure if the install runs from Windows or if it runs off of a disk. I guess we'll find out soon enough and you'll have until the end of January to get the $40 price.

You might buy one copy, try to install it on the XP machine, and if it fails, you can then install it on the Vista machine.

Oh that's a good idea!

It does boot into windows, and everything looks fine. But half of the system32 files are missing or corrupt. I am not sure there is any hope.

I am hoping that 8 is a download, because if it isn't I am not sure I will be able to install on the broken computer because it has a CD drive but no DVD drive. And I can't add a new drive because that is missing.

Borrow an external USB DVD drive, if you can.

I just upgraded this morning since I had an offer to upgrade for $14.99 with the computer I bought back in June. Thus far, except for stuff I just need to get used to, my only issue is it seems my virus protection is no longer compatible at the moment.
Hubby is going to look at it when he gets home to make sure I am not just missing something.

Definitely Upgrade from Vista

You should definitely upgrade to Windows 8 from vista (sorry you've been using that os for so long...)

I've been running the beta of Windows 8 for a couple of months and have really enjoyed it. It is basically Windows 7 but with some upgrade/different features.

If you're looking for more info, Mashable's live coverage was really good.

Install the virus protection software in compatibility mode. Right click on the setup up file and select the compatibility mode option.

I am updating to windows 8 as I write this. Or more so, dealing with the fallout of updating earlier today.

The purchase and update went fine, but the first time I restarted after the update completed, somehow it got corrupted and I had to do a refresh. Which unfortunately, involved deleting every application on my computer (although non application data was not effected). I tried every other means I could think off, but windows wouldn't start at all.

So now I am in the process of reinstalling everything. Luckily I run a constant backup to a networked drive.

The only two programs the installer had an issue with were my virus checker and zonealarm, both of which I uninstalled beforehand.

The only minor issue I am having since I got past the corrupt install, is that the mouse seems to not work as smoothly anymore. Moving folders is a pain and sometimes folders/programs open with one click instead of two. Also using the mouse in the metro interface is a pain. There are unintuitive delays required in the motions to move tiles and close apps. Possibly to prevent you from doing it by accident, but it takes some getting used to.

All of the programs I have reinstalled seem to work fine, but I have a ways to go before I can say they all work.

I did try the app store. You need to have a windows live account to download even the free ones. I used my xbox account, but had to go through a ton of email verifications and password resets since my computer was no longer recognized.

I would definitely recommend doing a full backup to an external drive before you upgrade and set up your email first, because you will have to use it to set up a windows account.

If you are using a computer that is a few years old, I'd recommend you run CHKDSK /R on the drive before attempting to upgrade. If the drive has any bad sectors, it could give you problems.

The installer may do that anyway, but it wouldn't hurt.

My computer is fairly new since we bought it in July. I did not have any on it really to lose so I was not worried about that. After dealing with tech support at Microsoft it is back up and running again.

WARNING: Do not wipe and install! They don't warn you that you won't be able to activate. :ohwell:

Now I'm going to have to downgrade so that I can re-upgrade. :burning:
