Windows PCs face ‘huge’ virus threat

FYI...Windows PCs face ‘huge’ virus threat
Computer security experts were grappling with the threat of a newweakness in Microsoft’s Windows operating system that could put hundreds of millions of PCs at risk of infection by spyware or viruses.
...
“The potential [security threat] is huge,” said Mikko Hyppönen, chief research officer at F-Secure, an antivirus company. “It’s probably bigger than for any other vulnerability we’ve seen. Any version of Windows is vulnerable right now.”

The flaw, which allows hackers to infect computers using programs maliciously inserted into seemingly innocuous image files, was first discovered last week. But the potential for damaging attacks increased dramatically at the weekend after a group of computer hackers published the source code they used to exploit it. Unlike most attacks, which require victims to download or execute a suspect file, the new vulnerability makes it possible for users to infect their computers with spyware or a virus simply by viewing a web page, e-mail or instant message that contains a contaminated image.

“We haven’t seen anything that bad yet, but multiple individuals and groups are exploiting this vulnerability,” Mr Hyppönen said. He said that every Windows system shipped since 1990 contained the flaw.
...
In the meantime, Microsoft said it was urging customers to be careful opening e-mail or following web links from untrusted sources.

Routinely Derailed
In the meantime, Microsoft said it was urging customers to be careful opening e-mail or following web links from untrusted sources.
That's okay as far as it goes, but all one has to do is go shopping or research a question - and going to a "new" web site is the same as going to an untrusted web site - and the potential for infection is there. I imagine our peace-loving bretheren worldwide are looking at the source code as we speak.....

Try www.bleepingcomputer.com. It's a forum that talks about computer problems. I used their advice this weekend to get rid of SpySheriff and its three little friends.
Thanks Bre, I'll give it a try. Been trying to get rid of this stupid surf sidekick for awhile now.

Two Words... Apple Macintosh

Macs run the beautiful and secure OS X ... New Mac hardware will allow you to run Windows also (if you absolutely have too!) Apple's OS-X has been on the market for 4 years and their hasn't been a single virus attack!! I have been running it from the beginning without any anti-virus software and I've never been infected (sorry M$ users I may have passed on a few virus's to you)... that's 4 years and no virus's at all!!! The packaged software on a Mac for Photo's, Music, Movies, and Web Production are amazingly good and easy to use are included free!! If you have an iPod and you love it than you've just had a taste of what it's like to have a Mac!! Just my 2 cents...

I don't like the Mac operating system. I also don't like paying twice as much for my computer that I can't configure.

OSX is amazing!

Have you actually used OS X? It's amazing! Just beautiful and very intuitive... what exactly do you want to configure? Everything on the mac is 'true' plug and play. Just plug it in and use it. After you use the iLife apps, dashboard, spotlight, safari and all the other cool mac apps you'll never want to go back! If you haven't used a Mac in a while try it again, you might be very surprised. If you go to a Mac store they actually have in store demos and will help you with the transition... Mac Mini's start at $499... my iMac has a 20" digital LCD, 250GB HD, 1GB RAM, Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, 802.11g, DVD +/- RW, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, Garage Band and Professional version of OS-X for $1999... They aren't as expensive as you think... Same config from Dell... $2019 ...

How do you know I'd like it? Does it work like Windows? If it works like Windows, I might like it. My only problem with Windows is all the worthless crap the put in it.

Hmmmm, let's see...
20" LCD...got mine for $340
250GB HD...got mine for $80
1GB RAM...$75
DVD+/-RW (DL)...$40
MB (ASUS)...$166
Processor (AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+)...$400
Windows Media Center...$90
Kbd/Mouse...$115 (not sure why you want to spend that much, but whatever)
Case...$50
Wireless...$20 (again, not sure why)
Other stuff (catch-all)...$50
Total...$1426 Ok, it's not half. Of course, I learned long ago that you're a fool if you buy the "latest and greatest" in computer stuff. I built my computer a little over a year ago for <$500 (without monitor) and it can process my photos with no problem. Why pay twice as much? What are you doing that requires that power? Surfing the net?

Easy Way Of Removing Surfsidekick 3!!

Hey ths is easy.

Firstly trun off ur system restore. Then run msconfig and untick ssk. Create a boot disk (instructions in hep and support center). Boot from the disk into safe mode, and then it appears in add / remove programs. From there u uninstall it (it will ask u for a code which it gives u). then when it has done that it, will ask you to reboot. Don't reeboot just then. Goaround ur hole machine and find and files related to ssk and remove them. Then reboot and its gone!!
