Windows Update Problem

Jeff

Stop Staring!!!!!
Dell gave me a new hard drive. Was preloaded with most everything for my laptop. Spent the last couple of days piddling with setting it up.

This morning went to MS Update website to download all of the latest updates and patches. Went through a few files, downloaded them and was told to restart the PC. Did that. Went back to get some more updates.

Now I have 4 High Priority updates it tells me that I need. It also tells me they are already downloaded and are ready to be installed. When I try to install these updates it tells me failed. I have tried this about 10 times.

I have already checked my security settings and set them to Windows Defalut per the FAQS troubleshooting page on the website.

Anybody else enocoutered anything like this?? Any ideas??

I called Dell and had them take over my PC and try as well. They were also unable to get the files installed. So now my automatic update thingy keeps telling me I need to install these and when I try it fails.:pete:

I did not realize that could be done. So the Key on the Back of the PC will work with any Windows XP Pro CD?

ello boggo, Welcome to TSF!

I suggest you try this workaround for Windows Update issues...

How to Repair the Windows Update Files.

1. Go Start > Run.
2. In the box type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL > Enter.
3. A message saying, "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" will appear > OK.
4. Now it is necessary to repeat these steps for each of the following files commands:
Hit Enter after each line

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Once finished; since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please carry out the following steps to rename the folder:

1. Go Start > Run > in the box type cmd > Enter.

Type the following command in the open panel.

net stop WuAuServ

(Please Note: the computer may need to be rebooted before the net stop command will work.)

2. Go Start > Run > type in the box %windir% > Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder ( by Right clicking) SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter. In the open command pane, please type:

net start WuAuServ

Once that’s done, Go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and see if it will allow the downloading/installation of Windows Updates.

Post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

yeah could be Windows Installer is Corrupt and needs repaired ...

1. Stop the Automatic Update service (Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services)

2. Delete the files in these two folders:

WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache

3. Restart the service

4. Download and run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe (for 32 bit systems) or WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe (for 64 bit):

Start -> Run -> Browse -> Desktop -> WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe & add the /wuforce command behind the quote.

"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Click Ok to install the Windows Update Agent

I was able to play with this some at work last night. Had no internet access so could not try any of the suggested fixes.

What I did was unistall a few programs I had installed since putting in the new hard drive. Then I Individually unistalled XP Service Pack 3 as well as about 12 Security patches. This finally enabled me to at least do a System restore and take it back to basically a new harddrive with nothing on it except the Dell stuff.

As I was removing files, the one file I deleted that seemed to have cleared up my particular dilemma was MS "Silverlight". As soon as I removed that I noticed the Windows update Icon in the system tray disappeared after a couple seconds. I don't know anything about Silverlight or it's relevance to this issue but it struck me as having something to do with this. Or it might have just been a delayed reaction to one of the applications I deleted previously.

The plan at this point is to slowly start reinstalling files one by one and see exactly which file it is that is causing me this problem.

All the big Computer manufact. add a bunch of CRAP to their installs. I like to wipe their drives and do a clean install of Windows. It's amazing how fast the computer boots and runs after you take all the factory crap off of it.

I use a program called PC Decrapifier to get rid of all the factory junk, it also takes out useless stuff.

I keep trying to install service pack 3, but it won't let me:shrug:

BB ... Windows Key and R |type: MSCONFIG,

click the "Selective Start" Radio button then clear the "Startup Items" Check box ...

also click the "Services" tab, check the box "Hide all Microsoft Services"

then disable all other services listed .... close out, you will be notified you need to reboot .... ignore alert when you reboot and login, RUN SP3 upgrade ... reboot when finished, undo all you did in step one ... :flowers:
