Windows Vista is at least twice as slow

What Intel Giveth, Microsoft Taketh Away

This, of course, will come as a disappointment for those of us who were hoping for some relief. Exhaustive testing confirms that Windows Vista is at least twice as slow as Windows XP when running on the same hardware. So it's doubly painful to learn that the rumored performance tweaks Microsoft has been hinting at for SP1 simply "never materialized." Bottom Line: Vista's performance is what it is, so "get used to it."

And your peripherals probably will not work on Vista. It is a conspiracy. Microjunk releases a new OS that is the best thing since sliced bread, so everyone has to have it. And the manufacturers like Dell and Gateway stop offering everything but the latest OS because of their agreement with Microjunk. And you have to get a faster processor and more memory or your system won't perform very well. And even if you get a faster processor and more memory, it may not perform as well as your old system. :duh: :banghead: And to top it off, your printer does not have a driver for the new OS, and the printer company will not make a driver for the OS because they no longer manufacture the model printer you have, so you have to get a new printer ... and modem ... and external hard drive ... and USB expansion card ... and Firewire ... and then you try to load your favorite software ... which also no longer works on the new OS.

Conspiracy.

Convert to Linux. It is better. It is more secure. Most of the software you pay hundreds of dollars for has free counterparts that are compatible with the stuff you bought in the past. And it has GUI (windows) environment, actually it has several including Gnome and KDE. KDE looks very much like a Windows desktop and Gnome looks much like a Mac.

Why are people still buying into the Microjunk myth that is is the best. It long ago stopped being the best. Control-Alt-Delete is not a normal thing to do on computers ... except when they run Microjunk.

IBM ............. its all there fault, If they had stayed out of the personal computer market it might well have been a different environment

Apple ][, Commodore, CP/M all in the PC Market when IBM released the "PC" with its DOS - stolen from CP/M - into the market place

the only good that came out of Vista is maybe the ScreenSaver that does a slideshow of all our Picture Albums and even plays our Video Clips

You can do that if you have Picasa installed. It adds that function to the Display Properties window on XP.

Dell recognizes the failure of Vista. There site says Dell recommends Vista, but they offer XP on their workstations as a choice.

Gosh I hope so. My workstation is a stalwart Dimension 360 baseline workstation running XP Pro. I run an application [more an environment] called Genesys by Agilent. Agilent | Agilent Genesys
Genesys will NOT support Vista in the near future due to the stability issues. This program is intolerant of slow OS machines is still clumsy in Windows vs the Unix/DOS versions. Considering the application costs 10k$ in a minimalist configuration, it is likely that the "upgrade" to Vista will cost 3-5k$ minimum when it becomes "necessary".

XP does the Pic Slide show

and several Gov. Agencies shelved Vista and Office 2k7 because of interop abilities with existing custom app's used by certain agencies

That's the reason I may go buy a Dell laptop because I can get one with XP. Went to Best Buy and all their laptops have Vista.

typical day at staples (no i no longer work there)

- noob buys laptop/pc
- previous noob from previous week who previously bought a laptop/pc complains they dont like PC and having problems
- noob at "easytech" desk paying $40 to remove vista, $89 to buy XP, $40 to install XP.

heres the catch, dont blame or get mad because of what you dont know specially at how simple computers are, specially now. build your own computer (1hr labor OMG). knowing what youre putting in your computer could save you hundreds of dollars. you get what you pay for, that acer for $400 laptop with 512mb RAM and celeron processor on Vista will have you coming back to the store, and the store technicians (err my bad, theyre actually salesmen trained to pretend as techs who are not qualified or certified to do the work theyre doing! - lot of them are not) will be ready to tell you you spend $$$ for memory, buy XP and make that $400 bargain into $1,000. Laptops are not upgradable (ok, they are, but for most people, custom made laptops are not fun), unless you need portability, stick to a desktop. I still use a case and power supply from a decade ago. Upgrading from an Athlon XP rig to a top end quad core with 8800gts cost ~$700 (and about $100 in rebates). That $700 will run me for years to come, this rig is a powerful workhorse as well as top end gaming. best of all, i didnt have to replace my hard drives, my operating system, my case, my power supply, my DVD drive, etc, totalling like $800+ in savings. and since everything has a warranty, i do not have to buy a store warranty.

What are you talking about??? I love Vista! Who doesn't love that no other program has "caught up" to this vast technology??? I mean, my yahoo voice chat doesn't even work anymore because its not Vista compatible-that thrills me! And I love how much memory it eats -half a gig of RAM just to have a pretty screensaver!!!!

How could anyone NOT love Vista???:yahoo:

Well, not everyone is as knowledgable as you. I've just started thinking about building my computer and it will take some time to figure out what I really want......an 8800 gts costs almost 400-500 doesn't it? If I was paying that much for a graphics card, I would buy a PS3 or an Xbox360 Elite if I wanted it just for gaming. Most people that don't want to build a computer, need a computer just for surfing the internet, checking email, chatting or documents. Who really uses all that power, just the PC gamers.

EVGA 8800gts (320mb)= ~$250 after rebates.

im hardly a gamer, though i'll let my kids get their game on sometimes.
ive had several people this year buy the same computer they initially said was overkill, ie, my current computer, you know, the people who wont spend $700 for a computer but end up liking the $1400 computer; its not for everyone. booting in <20seconds, installing windows in 15minutes, running your favorite 3d games with maxed out graphics settings without hickups, and MS office programs opening up the same second you hear your mouse click on the app turns on quite a few people. you know youve got someones attention when youre running their software on your computer and theyre asking you to "do that again? howd you do that so fast?" these werent gamers, they were car tuners, cad pros, web designers, people with degrees, retired people with cash to spare or credit cards, or people just tired of slow computers =). i myself use it for education, research, and work from my regular career at home as well as a side job of pc repair and support.

I built a x64 Win XP system 2 yrs ago for $ 1500 @ that time a Socket 939 Athlon 1.8 ( upgradeable to a 2.8 FX Series ), single Nvidia 7800 GT ( upgradeable to SLI ) 2 Gb of Ram .... Mobo case and 250 Gb Data Drive ......

all that has been surpassed now but you should be able to build a Core 2 Duo, 8800 Gt or ATI X1900 / 2900 Series a couple gigs of Ram, you fav HD and DVD - CDR/W Burner ......... maybe reuse a case upgrade a Power Supply - I put a 700W OWC in my Dell SC400 Server for 100 after rebate

Newegg is your friend

check out Computer, pc, review, reviews, how-to, overclock, windows, vista, DIY, computer DIY, videocard reviews, video card reviews, best of the best, power user, hardware, build your own computer - Maximum PC - then look for the issue that hold the budget build, or your newsstand there is usually a "Build your Own PC" tech Issue on the Newsstands ..........
