Windows XP makes every user an administrator by default. That is so very not secure.
Suggestion is to add a user that is a restricted user and always use the restricted user for surfing, email and the like. A restricted user cannot write to the registry and cannot install most (any ?) programs and I am pretty sure cannot write to the systems areas. Those are the places most worms, Trojans, spyware, and other malware try to install.
If you want the Administrator on the Welcome screen, you can edit the Special User area of the registry. Even better is to set your system to not use the Welcome screen and require control-alt-delete to log in.
It may not keep everything out, but this will help.
