Ok, this is probably just going to broadcast my ignorance, but here goes.
I get my Internet from DirecWay, the same guys who do DirecTV. So I get Internet by satellite. For the time being, it's the only way for us to get it.
The signal comes down to a satellite modem which as I understand it also serves as a router.
If I had only one computer, the rest would be easy - just hardwire the modem to my Ethernet card, and I'd be done. BUT - we have wireless throughout the house, and have, for the last year and a half.
We keep running into a familiar problem, which I usually "resolve" by tinkering. Sheer luck, as it were. And the problem is this:
I have a wireless router attached to the satellite modem. If I'd been smart, I would have bought an access point, but I bought it years before I had the satellite, and it works - usually.
For some reason, I can't get whatever is functioning as the DNS server to work. I can ping websites - so I'm getting signal, and transmitting one. I just can't surf.
This is where my knowledge ends - I have an IP address for the router - for the desktop - and for the satellite modem. My gut tells me, I need to use the wireless router address for my DNS server - but it doesn't seem to know how to talk to the modem.
Thankfully, I know how to make sure the router and the modem have different addresses - because out of the box, they were the *same*. Boy was that a problem. We just had a major outage, and repair, last week - and all hell is breaking loose as our wireless computers release and renew. So far, I'm getting nothing.
