Wireless router Question???

Ok I use my personal laptop at home and using a sprint wireless card (express slot) for broad band access. I would like to add the desk top in my kids room to my little network. I could obviously add a wireless router to the laptop. I want to find a way to keep my laptop portable and still utilize my wireless card to connect my network.


What is the best way to approach this

You could get a router that has a slot for your sprint card. The router talks to sprint, then you can either hardwire or WiFi to the desktop/laptop. There are a few out there. I only have personal experience with the Kyocera KR1, but that's been replaced with the KR2, mixed reviews. CleValley uses one, maybe he'll jump in here with his thoughts on that.

Thats zactly what I was wondering. I have not seen a router with the express slot yet I guess I just need to go look a little more.

Ok, at a minimum, the CradlePoint and Kyocera KR2 both support ExpressCard.

I use the Cradlepoint MBR1000 with an AT&T Express Card. Easy to setup, good firmware software and has worked very good for me.

I hope the Kyocera KR2 is better than the KR1 - I went through three KR1's in a years time and constantly had to reset it (once a week)

KR1s had a lot of issues, but I was lucky. I've been using mine (actually, it's running a corporate service for users) for a year with no issues. 99% of the problem was with the WiFi interference, but I don't (can't) use WiFi where I have placed it, so it's not a problem. Other than what's posted on EVDOforums.com, I don't have a clue about the KR2 or others.

Would it work the same way if I have a Verizon access card?

I just bought a new laptop Sunday and am going slightly batty with all this access terminology. I plan to go to the Verizon store tomorrow to buy an access card for $59.99 a month and sign a 2 yr contract. Is that the right move for me? I, too, would like to be able to use the Verizon access card on my home desktop. thanks

Most people use air cards with a router, if they can't get DSL or cable in their home. If that fits your description and you get good Verizon signal in your house, then you should be good to go.

Can you get DSL or cable? If you can that would be the easiest way to go, not to mention cheaper if you go with DSL service.

You can get router at Staples, Best Buy, etc.

Don't know if this applies to using a router or not?

I've got a USB wireless adapter from Verizon but also use an antenna with it. It's a magnetic mount like you would use on a car, but I keep it on a 12"x12" piece of expanded steel grate and it increases my signal 3X.

No on DSL. We have Directv. I think I could get Hughesnet internet service but that is very expensive. Plus, I don't believe that would help me with my laptop connection to the net.

Does your computer have a wireless mini card in it? Or do you have to use one of those express cards. I thought using the express cards were more expensive then anything else. I could be wrong. If you have to use the express card I cannot help you, I have no experience in those at all. Sorry. :shrug:

Can you get Metrocast? Air card/access card, it's all the same as long as we are talking about Internet access through cellular phone technology.

If the VerizonWireless service is bad, then a Verizon access card won't do you any good.

Hi. I went on Metrocast's website. I don't see anything about cell phones or access cards. Would it be under digital phones? Yes, it looks like we could get Metrocast. I'll contact them and see what they say. Thanks.

OK, so I called Metrocast. The lady explained that I could get a router (with their internet service) that would enable me to use my laptop in my home, but no where else. But overall, I might still do Metrocast because it would be faster than dial up and overall cheaper because I could cancel my ISP and my additional phone line. hmmmmmmmm

Vanbells- yes our Verizon connection is sucky, but in certain areas of the house it does work. My sister brought her laptop here and it has the Verizon card and was able to get some connection, but not great.
