Wireless router with Comcast

Is anybody else having problems connecting a wireless router to a Comcast cable modem. I purchased my wife a laptop and we purchased a Linksys wireless and will not work. I know the laptop works because she can connect with other peoples wireless (Panera's for example) Is Comcast doing something that I don't know about. I can plug her laptop directly into the LAN from modem and it works. Just not with a router.

When you had comcast install the modem, what device was initially connected to the modem? I'm assuming it wasn't directly connected to the router.

I'm pretty sure your going to have to clone the PC's mac address to the LinkSys router. You can read more about this process in the users/owners manual. If you don't understand the process, PM me and I'll help you out.

That modem your assigned/purchased is provisioned on the ComCast network using a unique MAC address, so no pirates hit the network. :)

Not currently having any problems, nor have I in the past had to clone the MAC in order to get it to work. I would certainly try updating the firmware first. Have you logged into the router and verified the settings are correct?

:yeahthat:...also, I learned the hard way..I went thru 3 hrs of this and that when all it took was a power off and on after I installed the router and laptop..

No, it's so you'll have to pay more for any additional connection. Though I suppose it depends on the specific equipment used in a particular market, nothing, including cloning the MAC address, and wasting time on the phone with their tech support, worked in my daughter's apartment in Arlington, and I've installed several other wireless networks with no or minor trouble before (not with Comcast, though.)
