Wireless/Wired Internet Access

But wait, there's more...
My work laptop doesn't have wireless internet, therefore, I have to plug it directly into my router here at home. My personal laptop, however, does have wireless. If I plug a LAN cable from the work laptop into my personal laptop, will I still be able to access the internet (thus allowing me to access my work email) using the connection through my personal laptop?

I'd just test it to find out, but that laptop is so damn slow, it takes awhile to connect. :ohwell:

The answer is no. You'd want a Crossover Cable. You would be best buying a USB or PCMCIA wireless card or making a Crossover cable.

This wouldn't give you internet access right of the bat. It might but I wouldn';t get your hopes up on this:
A two-computer network, sometimes called a peer-to-peer network, can be created using a crossover Ethernet cable. Like any other network, each computer needs to be assigned a unique IP address. The other machine, in turn, can act as the default gateway (or router), mirroring the same address.

I use VPN to connect to my network, then outlook for email.

you can add another account to your personal computer's outlook to check your work email on the wireless network while at home... i'd do it that way but I don't need to check your work email

or buy a USB wireless connector... they're small and cheap... kinda like someone else I know   :lmao:

You can connect via a LAN cable but it would mess up your personal computer settings and how it connects to the internet. Basically, your setup...when asked...would be to select the option where your computer connects through another system. This is much like how you set up a home networking system. This does not however change how you would connect to check your work email. That is an entirely different setup.

My computer can go wireless via my PDA

I have a PCMCIA wireless card just sitting here at home from an old Toshiba laptop. It's just collecting dust at this point. I can't believe how you non-techies are so nprepared for hardware failures... :lmao:

Easier solution is get a damn verizon air card

It's my work laptop ... 1) I'm not paying for extra internet service when I already have it (and am quite happy with it) at home already. 2) I don't work from home that often. Usually it's just checking in on my email in the morning and night if there's something pressing going on.

I was just thinking that for the sake of today, it would've been nice to bring my work laptop out here to the family room, but my router is in the guest bedroom downstairs. :ohwell:

I've got a WLAN card from an old Toshiba collecting dust. You can have the card and the laptop...
