Maybe those are older drivers who haven't yet realized that Lexington Park is now Waldorf South when it comes to traffic.

one big fat crusty :yeahthat: to nomoney!

i have to say though that I don't think the driving schools (or some parents, apparently) teach student drivers how to judge speed and distance too, as evidenced by the number of accidents/deaths from teens trying to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic. :ohwell:

it's not ... it's the kids too ... driving schools teach 'em to drive the speed limit in the fast lane because "it's smoother driving". :duh:

Do kids even HAVE to go to driving schools these days? The state cut back its subsidy for driver's ed around 1990 or so. The public school systems decided to drop their driver's ed programs rather than ask students to pay $180. (It used to be $35, and it kept going up through the '80s.)

http://mva.state.md.us/MVAProg/ROOKIEDRIVER/bGeneralProvisional.htm

A parent, guardian or supervising driver must submit a completed and signed practice log documenting a minimum of 40 hours of supervised driving for applicants.

That's WAY too low, in my opinion. I would say at least 200 hours, and preferable 500 to 1,000 hours, before the kid can drive solo.

Unless we move before the DQ turns 16, my plan is to have her attend the school (simply b/c she HAS to); but then she can get her learner's permit, which she'll keep till she's 18, and Tater, her Dad and I will teach her to drive properly.

Sorry Kain ... I've only been here for 3.5 years, but maybe it's that SoMD is still in the "country" mindset when it comes to driving and roadways; yet, the increasing population forces more people on the road. And whether those people were born here or moved her like I did, we still pay for those roads with our taxes, and have just as much right to 'em and for them to be safe. I see more near-wrecks (and sometimes wreck aftermath) because of some kid who doesn't yield properly, tries to run an intersection, or isn't paying attention on the road. :ohwell:

The kids (16, 17) are bad drivers, but the worst drivers that I see here are the people coming off the base and going north on 235. Every day there are near misses, especially between the two Wildewood lights...

Anybody who teaches an impressionable youth to drive slowly in the left lane should be knee-capped.

Agreed! :high5:

I'm curious ... with all the peeps on this forum from different states, what do they teach you about the left lane where you learned to drive? Pls name the state, too.

PA says left lane is for passing only ... and if you drive for more than a mile or two in the left lane and you DON'T pass, you WILL get a ticket (if a cop catches you). This rule is eased in bumper-to-bumper conditions though, I believe.

DE is the same way, in respect to the left lane being for passing/faster vehicles.

Actually I learnt how to drive right here in SoMd - At Calvert High School. I remember my Driver's Ed teacher STRESSING that the left lane is for passing and for preparing for left turns.

I can't believe that a teacher would teach otherwise in the name of "smoother driving". What kind of crap is that?

Fun expirement. Get a few of your friends - and drive side by side at 40 miles per hour. Do this on Rt 235, 5, 4, 2&4 ... wherever.

My bet is that you'd NEVER get stopped or even get a second look by the police. The most police activity you'd see is when they flash you, you pull over, they pass, and go about their business.

You may get your ass whooped by a pised off redneck, but you wouldn't get a ticket, or warning, or "walnut shampoo".

Texas is number 8 on list, above Md. I've seen an awful of Texas tags on #235 lately. I have driven in Texas so I do know from experience how bad they are. In there defense however I must say they at least go the speed limit in the left lane, that of course being a posted 65.

Where I'm from in PA, the left lane is for driving in the other direction.

I still find it funny that so many people blame all the bad driving on kids. Like its not us middle aged people who have the majority of the accidents.
