"LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Jan. 13, 2009) - Ms. Rachel Gilman, a sophomore at Leonardtown High, has been accepted into the People to People Student Ambassador Program, an educational travel program founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower."

"As a member of the Northern Virginia/Maryland delegation, Ms. Gilman will explore several countries for 21 days during the summer of 2009. By participating in the European program, she can earn academic credit while getting to know the people, culture, and history of the places visited. She will take part in a variety of activities such as hearing an insiders' perspective on British government from a member of Parliament, envisioning World War II's historic D-Day landing as they walk the beaches of Normandy, taking in a thrilling view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower, seeing the Hague where matters of international justice are decided, and hiking in the breathtaking Swiss Alps."

Rare opportunity of a lifetime. It would depend on the child though.

If she is being given this opportunity one might assume she's mature enough to handle the significant travel experience.

I'm thinking that she's probably a Type A, prepared leader, sort of young lady

Wonder how much this special program that she got accepted to cost her parents...
There is that. I would also want to invest in some self defense courses prior to take off, no matter the cost as well.

I used to lead groups on international exchanges. It is an incredible experience for the child. They grow up, become independent, realize they can handle things without having Mom and Dad getting involved. A great way to travel and make friends. It's not cheap, but how much do you spend on your teen each week? It might even be cheaper to let them travel and have experiences that you could never give them.

Because it's nothing but a money scam in my opinion. But don't take my word for it:

"Parents across the country have filed complaints with ConsumerAffairs.com about the misleading marketing tactics People to People uses to recruit students for its trips abroad. Parents say the letters led their children to believe they were "specially chosen" or nominated for these trips. Parents later discovered the travel company obtained their child's name from a mailing list."

"During her investigation, though, Sheryl says she made a stunning discovery: People to People was not founded by President Eisenhower."

"The organization came under fire in 2005 by the Iowa Attorney General's office for sending a letter to a mother, which stated her son was named for a Student Ambassador trip overseas. Her son, however, had died in 1993. He was seven weeks old. Iowa officials did not take legal action against People to People. The organization later donated $5,000 to Iowa's SIDS Foundation and $20,000 to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines;"

Isn't it really the parents paying for this?

"The cost varies by program, but has been reported at approximately $5,000-$7,000 for a high-school program in a foreign country and approximately $2,000-$3,000 for a domestic program.[5] The tuition cost does not include items such as passport costs, potential fuel surcharges, emergency funds, or souvenirs."

Now let's look at the financials:

Do you really think the people running this thing deserve those hundred of thousands in salary?

I'm actually pretty shocked that people would turn their kids over to stuff like this without even doing a simple Google search.

For once, I agree with Boy Genius.

This is the point I was making in a less than obvious way.

They run multitudes of these scams EVERY year. They take your money, treat your kid like cattle, feed them crap..Basically give them a $500 trip that only costs you $5000, and make you feel good about your "special kid"

I won't say that it's totally a scam because you do get something back for the money ($5-7,000) depending on where you go. And yes, it's a mass marketing tactics which would me somebody believe that their children are specially chosen. The same people who believes that sending their children to "Modeling School" would make then a model. My daugther got one, we went to the briefing and declined it. For the cost, a family of four could fly to Europe and enjoy as much less the group activities they are promising.

I went to the presentations. Yes, the way they promote it is kinda cheesy, but it's really no different than a make up commercial suggesting you will look 20 years younger with their product or a beer commercial suggesting you'll be lean and athletic by drinking beer.

I don't want my children growing up looking at the world through the simplistic view of what OTHER people may get or not out of something when they are considering what THEY are getting out of it. That leads to liberalism and is an ugly, 'eat the rich' way to view the world. Every kid I know that went, loved it, as did their parents. Could it be cheaper? Sure. So could skipping any vacation.

It's a good experience for the kid and if a couple grand is make or break for a family then, sure, you can't afford it, you can't afford it.

You can get airfare, lodging and meals in Paris for $500 for three weeks?

I'd send a kid but I'd want at least 6 cases of imported beer and 200Lb's of bratwurst in exchange...
