Saw this poor guy today. Looks like a fishing hook in his right leg. One lady I talked to said he's been this way for awhile now. She and at least one other woman have called DNR, to no avail.

He tries to keep all weight off of it when standing. When I saw him swimming, he was only using his left leg (No, he wasn't swimming in circles)

Of course the problem with a wild duck is that unless you treat them to a nice dinner and loosen them up with a bottle of wine, you're not going to get close to him/her.

If someone can help and needs more info, email me at david @ this domain or 888-612-0003 x11.

No, it was not. I didn’t know you had an MPD from 2015. I saw your post. I won’t tell. Bark! Poor mallard has a fishing hook in the leg. I hope the duck gets the care needed.
Is that what it is? A fishing hook? At this time of year? I would lay odds on it being an injury from a steel shotgun pellet it acquired during duck hunting season. It looks more like an infection with a strand of ligament dangling.

Call DNR - we did this for a black snake that was tangled in bird netting. They sent a wildlife rescuer out fairly quickly.
"If you should come across wild animals that appear to be sick or injured, you may search by County to locate a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators in your area who may be able to help, or you may call Wildlife Services toll-free at 1-877-463-6497 to get this information."

That duck looks like a hybrid. Probably a cross between a mallard and the white pekin seen in one of the pictures.
Come to think of it. The DNR may kill that hybrid and the White Pekin. The White Pekin is domestic and not considered wildlife.
The DNR doesn't like the wildlife blood line getting screwed up.

I don't know. It looks just like the hundreds of Mallard drakes I've s.. errrr... come into contact with over the years.

For your next post, the WCOs typically don't cull domestics mixed in with wild stock. You're correct when you say the biologists don't like to see hybridizing but they figure the Circle of Life will take care of it.

As a note, Mallard drakes will mate with a fencepost if it stands still long enough.
