Writing/Editing Jobs

I've been looking at the Southern Maryland employment pages here on this site and slogged through a million defense contractor Web sites, and I'm about ready to give up.

I am a recent college grad with a bachelor's in English and journalism and desperately want to move back to Southern Maryland. I've applied to all the newspapers around here and wherever else I can think of, but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas or heard of any place looking for an editor, reporter, technical writer, etc.? Even something in public relations will do. Thanks!

Just for starters, employment's not that easy to come by in this area. Why don't you get your resume together along with a cover letter about what you're looking for and send it out to all the contractors you see listed. The company that I work for has a company newspaper and the person they hired for that job supposedly had to have the qualifications you have. I'll bet other contractors have newspapers also. Good luck!

The classified section, post your resume and wait for the calls to pour in...ok well they wont pour in but alot of companies do cruise the resume section, thats how I got my job!

Dixie, do you happen to know offhand specific contractors with company newspapers/newsletters, or at least the one for which you work? You can PM me if you want.

Try applying your skillset to the needs of the employers here. They don't need editors for newspapers, they need editors for user manuals, technical manuals, Statements of Work.. RFP's etc.. etc..

Re-aim, re-focus re-write your resume to fit the job.

I believe BAE employs quite a few technical writers and editors that are contracted through the government either editing manuals that come from Contract Work, or being generated by Government work itself.

Most likely you're going to end up working & writing for the government, not a local newspaper. I'm about to graduate with a bachelor's in Communication Studies & Public Relations...and that's exactly what I'm planning on doing. Get your resume to as many people you know who work for the base. Good luck!

My dad used to write up some stuff for this computer place in PG County. He used to write all day long about video cards and mother cards and how to formulate hard drives and turn stuff on. My grandma HATES computers with all her might so my dad told her he worked for PG County writing up brochures about how to clean dog bites and avoid head lice and whatever, and that's a real job too. My dad got really sick from the well water and had to stay in bed for six weeks with ointments and lozenges, and he got fired from that job. Anyways, other jobs include writing books, magazines, pamphlets, coupons, Bibles, newspapers, instructions, words, etc. Some writers are famous and others are not, but like my grandma always says "It's nice to be famous, but it's more important to be left alone and people to stay off your property and mind their business or whatever." I hope you get a job writing some stuff and maybe someday I will read it or read about it.

You may be well-suited for a position called, "Communications Director." (Some of the writing positions are not well-named).

But wait, there's more...
If you're in College Park, DC would be a better "commute" for you. Visit www.usajobs.opm.gov (Uncle Sam's help wanted site) and look for series 1082 (writer/editor), 1083 (technical writer) and 1035 (public affairs) in the DC metro area.

We could use a good writer and editor for a project I'm working on but it's in DC and requires some experience, even if it's just internships. If you're interested, PM me and I'll point you to the advertisement.
