XT vs XTi

I'll be taking the leap from point and shoot to DSLR soon. The Nikon D40/D40x isn't an option because of the autofocus issue.

Price-wise, I like the Digital Rebel XT, but I really don't like the LCD screen. I've read that it's acceptable to save money by getting the XT, then buying decent lenses (I don't think I'll be getting the kit lens). Is there anything, besides the bigger LCD screen, on the XTi that's a "must have" that constitutes the extra money? I would feel kind of silly spending the extra money for an LCD screen.

Also, does anyone know when the XTs is supposed to be released? Will that drive the price down on the XTi?

That bigger screen is actually pretty nice to have. The XTi has 2 more mega pixels, slightly faster frame rate, little better autofocus, and a sensor cleaning system. I'm sure there are others but these are the things I remember from buying mine.

What auto focus issue?

Danzig or JBR13 can give you a more detailed answer but I believe the issue is that the D40 autofocus doesn't work with existing lenses. It needs lenses designed FOR the D40. I think...

The XTi has the image sensor cleaner and more pixels.
I think the price has gone down on these recently because of the XSi coming out. It was supposed to be offered the 24th, but no one seems to have them last time I looked. It will be around $800 for just the body It uses a SD card if that matters to you.
Also the kit lens is the one I use most often. Make sure you get a memory card, the non kit cameras don't usually come with one.

Nope, wouldn't like that..

I thought the autofocus issue was the lenses from my FE wouldn't be autofocus (which weren't in the first place).. Didn't know it was specific lenses to that specific camera..

Buy a used D50
I thought about that, but I'm not generally trusting of people and I'm afraid I don't know enough to figure out if there's something wrong with it right away. :ohwell:

So, yes? Worth the extra $150-ish?
I'd say yes. Here is a comparison.

That shows the same frame rate, but the cleaning system alone can be worth it if you've ever had a stubborn piece of dust.

Also, the only metering mode listed for the XTi is evaluative, but it has the center-weighted average and partial like all the others.

Ah, but the shutter lag time of the XTi is a millisec whereas the XT has .001second lag.

What auto focus issue?
The D40/D40X doesnt have an auto focus motor built into the camera body like the higher line models, thus for the auto focus to work you have to purchase lenses that have their own auto focus motor.....which is most of the newer DX lenses.

I recall Phxyius was mentioning selling a Nikon D80 and I believe HVP was thinking of selling his Canon 30D.

Yes, all the new DX lenses have an autofocus motor built into them that is electronically controlled via contacts around the edge of the lens conection. The older lenses will only be manual focus, but other than that will be fine.

If you are looking at getting the D40/D40X and the lense that comes with it you will be fine! IF you don't plan on spending $500 or more on a lens in the future you are good. But if you plan on getting faster glass ie F2.8 or buying older used lenses this may present a problem.

Really depends on how far you are looking at going with the D40/D40X

If you just want a good camera/DSLR and plan on using it like a point and shot.....ie always using the Auto modes, the D40/D40X is great.

The 50mm f/1.4 (but, realistically the f/1.8 :nomoney:) is on my immediate wish list, so the D40's a no-go.

If I wanted to use something like a point and shoot I'd get the Canon Powershot S3 IS, or something similar.

Nickel, Yes, if you are looking at getting lenses like that I would move away from the D40, D40X, and the New D60 that is coming out.

Sorry about the whole point and shoot comment, just that there are so many people out there now buying DSLR's that never take them out of Auto mode.
It is crazy how many people spend the money for a DSLR that really cold have just got something like the S3 IS or the Sony DSCH9. They could save them selves hundreds of dollars, and got a built in zoom of 12X to 15X optical, and been exactally what they needed.

Yeah, I don't understand that at all. I don't even know why they make Auto on D-SLRs, especially the pro-sumers.
