Yahoo! Won't Let Dead Marine's Family Into His In Box

Internet giant Yahoo! says it sympathizes with the family of a Marine killed in Iraq, but it's still not granting access to his e-mail account.
Lance Corp. Justin Ellsworth was killed last month by a roadside bomb in the Al Anbar province.

His family says it wants access to his e-mail account so it can "remember him in his words."

However, since they don't know the password, they can't get to it. And Yahoo! officials say the company's privacy rules prohibit them from giving it to anyone.

I agree with Yahoo on this one. The family should not get access to his e-mail account just because they want to "remember him in words". I mean for example, imagine something happening to fddog and his family getting access to his e-mail account... I really don't think those would be the words they would want to remember him by...:shocking:

Umm...Some of my bills are e-mailed to my yahoo account and only that way. If, for example, my house burned down and me with it, my parents wouldn't even know who to contact without access to my e-mail.

So give your password to your parents if you expect them to pay your creditors upon your death. :duh:
I am sure when you signed up for your electronic bill pay, you had to give them a snail mail address.
Still no reason for a company to give out personal details about their users.

Then leave your account and password in the will. :yay:

1. I did give them a snailmail address but I don't know how overdue the bill would be before they used it. 1 month, 6 months, 1year?

2. I have given my mom the password from time to time but I change it 3 or 4 times a year.

Maybe I could do something with the forgoten password thing.

Hello? What difference would it make? You would be dead and what will it do hurt your credit rating?

It's not mom's job to pay your bills after you die. If you have a husband, maybe. If you have money in the bank, the creditors can put a claim on it, if they know you are dead. That's why death notices are published. Creditors have a certain amount of time (either 3 or 6 months, I don't remember) to come forward and make a claim against your "estate" and if there's any money to be had, they can get it, otherwise they are out of luck. Unless Mom co-signed the loan, it's not her business to pay it off.

No, no, no. I'm talking about her being the personal representative who settles the estate.

Do you think they'll turn off your utilities if your bills go unpaid because your house burned down and you died in the fire? How would anyone know? :twitch:
