“The context of this conversation was concern over the redistricting process and concern about the potential negative impact it might have on communities of color,”

How about elected officials worry about how things negatively impact all their constituents?

TBH, communities of color have been coddled for 6 decades and can't seem to get ahead in the game of life in America. A lot of energy is expended trying to help them while they resist helping themselves. Perhaps it's time to take a new approach with where the concern needs to be concentrated.

In the audio, from 2021, L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez compared the adopted black son of fellow council member Mike Bonin to a monkey. She later referred to Bonin, a gay white man, as a “little b****” and said he is raising his child like a “little white kid.” She has since resigned as president but appears to remain on the council.

“I am appalled at the racist, dehumanizing remarks made by Los Angeles City officials and leaders that were made public yesterday,” said Padilla. “As a father, I am offended that an innocent child was the target of these remarks.”

Padilla also called for the resignation of Councilmembers Kevin de León, a California Democratic heavyweight who unsuccessfully challenged Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) in a 2018 primary, and Gil Cedillo. Both of them were part of the call when Martinez made the comparison, according to the Los Angeles Times. Cedillo doesn’t appear to speak during that segment, and told the news agency on Sunday night, before the news broke, that he did not recall that conversation.

During one portion of the leaker call, de León suggests that Bonin treats his black child as an accessory, the same way one would treat a Louis Vuitton handbag. Martinez also suggests Bonin brings his child around during Black History Month.

The black Americans I grew up around were working class and professionals.

Our neighbor, Mr. Carter, was an HVAC tech who worked with my dad. His son James was one of my play buddies when I was a kid.

My Italian maternal grandparents engaged the services of a lawyer and CPA to help them keep their business going.
Both men were black. Mr. Johnson, their lawyer is still my ideal of elegant.

Mrs. Williams, my Kindergarten teacher, was a black Lady.

I truly think that the black folks I knew would stand alongside Candace Owens.

When I hear a politician say community of color, I always think they are referring to the urban areas of cities that are disproportionately minority and they rely heavily on government services. Think more of the people that failed to evacuate during hurricane Katrina.

I don't think the folks in your examples are part of that community, even if they look like them. I don't think the politicians are talking about the minority neighborhoods of Ft. Washington or Bowie. It's Anacostia, West Baltimore and parts of Lexington Park. The part where all the recent shootings are occurring.

Biden Calls on LA City Council Members to Resign over Racist Remarks

President Joe Biden demanded the resignation of three Los Angeles City Council members Tuesday who were caught on leaked recordings making racist remarks and conspiring to exploit the redistricting process for political gain.

“He believes that they all should resign,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at a briefing. “They should all step down.”

In addition to the president, multiple Democratic politicians have denounced the comments of the officials, who are all Democrats. On the audio in question, now former city council president Nury Martinez, members Kevin de Léon and Gil Cedillo, and now former labor leader Ron Herrera can be heard using racist rhetoric to ridicule a black child, knock colleagues, and maneuver the city’s redistricting process to gain an electoral advantage.

Biden is only playing the game. These people will not resign and he knows it. Give it 2 weeks and the BS will die down and things will be fine again.

What was said was racist—that’s not in dispute, but I thought that nonwhite folks could not be racist. For years, we were told that only white people could only carry that infamous moniker because they dominate specific power structures. It’s another lefty pseudointellectual goalpost that prevents the Left from calling out their side over viciously racist remarks. Does anyone stop and think why ‘stop Asian hate’ had a shelf life of about 20 seconds? It’s because Asians were predominately being assaulted and beaten by black Americans. The narrative was that white Trump supporters were committing the violence, and the crime statistics were compiled. These assaults were racially motivated, but not by the racial group the media loves to use as a punching bag. No doubt, they would weaponize these attacks against Trump and the GOP if the race was right. It wasn’t, so these assaults got suffocated with a pillow.

The woke Left is just a mess on these issues. The ever-changing rules on race and what constitutes as racism change every day, hence this new rule that now declares nonwhite folks can be racist. Of course, we all knew that anyone of any racial and ethnic group could hold prejudiced views, but now that a Democrat-run city is in ruins over a racial scandal, with Biden offering comment—the rules must change. Mr. Bonin is also gay, so it added another layer to this deep blue woke lefty mess.

What Does the LA City Council Scandal Reveal About Race and Politics?

Race And Racism, City Council, Racism, Latin Americans, Black Americans, Redistricting

AllSides Summary

After the Los Angeles Times (Lean Left Bias) published quotations of a leaked audio from a redistricting meeting featuring three LA city council members in which now-ex council member Nury Martinez expressed racially disparaging comments about fellow council members and the LA community, a number of pieces have been published analyzing what the controversy reveals about race relations in America as well as the value of transparency is politics.

Key Quotes: An analysis in NBC News (Lean Left Bias) stated that “prejudice from Latino to Latino and Latino to other racial groups is not so uncommon.” One writer for the New York Times Opinion (Left Bias) voiced fears that “with the browning of America, white supremacy could simply be replaced by — or buffeted by — a form of ‘lite’ supremacy, in which fairer-skin people perpetuate a modified anti-Blackness rather than eliminating it.” In a piece for Reason (Lean Right Bias), one writer argued the scandal reveals the necessity of transparency in political discourse, stating that this controversy “shows how unwarranted that romance for smoke-filled rooms really is.”

For Context: After the story broke, many prominent Democratic Party members called for the council members featured on the tape to resign, most notably President Biden. Nury Martinez, who was the President of the council and made the statements, has resigned. The other two have not.

How the Media Covered It: The statements from Martinez were covered nationally as calls for resignation mounted. Opinion and analysis pieces across the spectrum condemned her remarks.

Martinez has resigned as President of the Council. She still on the Council.
