(10/05/06 -- DURHAM) - Police are investigating reports of a person with a gun at Riverside High School in Durham, the school's principal said.

The search began around 3:15 p.m. A Durham school spokesman says someone believed to have a weapon was spotted on the Riverside High School campus. Officials soon arrested a suspect off campus, the spokesman said.

Students who remained at the school for afterschool activities were placed on lockdown. Eyewitness News reporter Ken Ward reports road closures around the school and lots of police activity. Parents are showing up, trying to pick up their students.

Riverside's principal tells Eyewitness News that a student called 911 saying they saw someone with a gun walking around the school.

A Durham 911 dispatcher gave a slightly different story. A dispatcher says a student called a parent in Chapel Hill about a suspicious person. The parent dialed 911 and police are investigating, the dispatcher said.

The news station just updated this with "breaking news" that the "woman/girl" with the gun has been apprehended. :shocking: (the site doesn't have that bit yet though).

NOW they're saying they didn't find the person with the gun. :confused:

Sheeesh ... I'm not sure what's worse -- not finding the person, or wrongly reporting that they did. :ohwell:
