Young Cat With Chronic Gingivitis.....

hammishsqueak

We're all mad here.
I have a cat, Bailey, who will be three in May. He is an incredibly sweet animal and I love him to death. Despite trying to take good care of him and his teeth, he has worsening gingivitis. Recently, he has even started to drool. I brought him to the vet and she suggested a water additive or brushing several times a week. I tried brushing and it was a no-go, but I'm going to try again. I also tried a water additive, Petkin Liquid Oral Care, and he refused to drink the water even when I put a tiny amount in (I can smell it, so I figure he can).

I really don't know what to do other than continue to try to brush his teeth. I know that the vet offers teeth cleaning, but I'm not sure if that would only be a temporary fix. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm willing to dip deep in my savings if I must to save his teeth and mouth! I just want him to be happy and healthy.

PS: I am feeding him Purina's Indoor Formula (dry) and only give him hard cat treats.

I use a water additive which doesn't smell or taste - I know, I tried it!! I will get the name of if for you as soon as I can get out from under this cat!

Haha, thanks :lmao: My cat doesn't let me move when he's comfortable, either!

OK, it's Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. I get it from St Mary's Veterinary Hospital down here in Lexington Park. I assume it does what it says it does! I have also tried the toothbrushing with no luck - not sure how you're supposed to manage it!!! Oh, and I know I said this stuff doesn't smell, but I can't smell skunk either, so sorry if it's disgusting. My two fussy cats don't seem to care, never stopped drinking their water.

Awesome, thank you

CET makes some great dental products. They make some "chew" treats that help maintain dental health, but I doubt they will "fix" an existing problem. My recommendation would be to let your vet do a teeth cleaning (it will be a deep cleaning that you can't do at home) then once they are CLEAN, maintain that level of cleanliness at home by using the water additive, chews, and brushing if you can. The water addative, chews, etc are not going to fix an existing case of gingivitis... you have to get them clean first.
