So I wanted more opinions on this one…
I have a small 15lb Boston terrier mix and I live in a local apartment complex. He is still a puppy so he still likes to eat things, like the snow. I was getting the mail @ my apartment Friday with him on the leash and I noticed he was eating the slushy snow mix off the sidewalk. Then he had a fit. Thrashed his head around, foamed at the mouth, and spit it out. I noticed it had a blue tint to it.

I called the apt. complex office and asked them if they used any kind of de-icer so that I knew what to tell the vet if I had to run him in. The woman put me on hold for a few minutes to check and came back on and assured me they used ONLY salt.

Today I drove by the office and I saw a PALLET of bags of chemical de-icer right outside the office I called yesterday. “Combo Therm” was the name of the product. On the bags there is a clear warning; ‘harmful if swallowed’. What if he had ingested more of it? What if it killed him? I know I am ultimately responsible for my dog and what he comes into contact with... And I do a pretty good job of making sure he doesn’t eat harmful things.

Eh, eh? You think I should say or do something? What if another dog does the same thing… they like to eat snow.

as a side note, he seems to be doing fine. phew.

I would think that since the apartment complex is primarily responsible for keeping the sidewalks de-iced, they are going to consider the safety of their residents and visitors over that of the animals. I'm glad your dog is okay. Now you know not to let him eat snow... at all.

You raise a good point. I never thought about checking to see what we use on our walk ways.

I would call and say something like, "I just wanted to let you know for future reference, I saw bags of Combo-therm (or whatever it was) sitting outside your office. You might want to take note of the name so you have it in case others call in with questions."

What about getting other dog owners to sign a letter stating that you appreciate them allowing you to have pets but for the safety of all the pets, you all would appreciate them using a different de-icer, even sand, around your apartments. There is strength in numbers. Or ask them for a MSDS sheet and point out the potential harm to both animals AND children. JMHO.
