A defamation lawsuit filed by the creators of a St. Mary's youth football program against the president of another football program has been settled, a lawyer said this week, ending a dispute between the groups.
The complaint filed on behalf of Donald and Trude Kemp also accused Christopher D. Pixton of intentional misrepresentation in negotiating an agreement for Pixton to purchase football gear from Kemps' program, St. Mary's Pigskin Football and Cheerleading Inc.
The dispute centered on the ownership of football equipment stored at a county park, and on Pixton's comments last year on an Internet radio show, also broadcast on a local radio station.
"A settlement has been reached, and I'm glad the parties have been able to amicably resolve their differences," Thomas McManus, the Kemps' lawyer, said Tuesday.
A letter by Pixton to the Kemps has been posted on the Web site of the St. Mary's County Youth NFL Flag Football program.
"I want to take this time to say how sorry I am about comments that I made about you and your football program on our weekly radio show in July 2009," Pixton wrote. "I was given false information and I chose to act on that information without speaking with you first. I allowed myself to listen to rumors and what I should have done was to come to you directly."
Pixton's letter continued, "I found out later that the statements that I made were untrue and after speaking with you several times and working through the problems that we had, I learned that St. Mary's Pigskin was a program for the kids. I have said it many times that the community should stand up and applaud you for the program that you have run for 25 years."
The letter identifies Pixton as the president of St. Mary's County Youth Sports Inc., described on its Web site as a nonprofit sports and recreational organization primarily for children between the ages of 4 and 17.
