What is the best way to treat cradle cap?

Cradle cap often disappears on it's own accord. Rarely are prescriptions needed to treat the rash, and many natural treatments are very effective. First, avoid harsh baby shampoos. Unfortunately, many shampoos available in the local supermarket or drug stores are very drying and can make the condition worse. Choose a gentle, natural baby shampoo that won't dry baby's tender skin, such as Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo Bar (see . Wash gently, and rinse well. Apply a natural, pure oil created for the treatment of Cradle Cap (we like Herbs for Kids Cradle Cap and Massage Oil (see [ and comb gently with a wooden fine-toothed comb. Avoid aggressive brushing or combing of baby's hair. Should the scalp become damaged, infection can set in. Remove as much of the crust as possible, then wash again with gentle baby shampoo.

Most of all, be patient. Usually cradle cap clears up on its own fairly quickly. Be sure to check with your baby's health care professional if you have any questions.

There is no need to ever get cradle cap. Use a soft brush when washing your baby's hair. It is just a build up of shampoo and dead skin. It dosen't hurt a baby to scrub their head with a soft brush. But now that they have it, use baby oil ( let it sit on his head for a while) and a soft brush.

Ever see the baby's head turn red while brushing it? You don't think that irritates it?

If you use the soft brush that they use in the hospital to wash their head from their first bath, they wont get cradle cap and it dosen't hurt their head. Some mothers (very good, mothers) don't realize that you can do this. I have 3 children 2 grandchildren and plenty of friends that have done this and their babies didn't get cradle cap and didn't have irritated heads.

It can be prevented.

Oh for Christ's sake, shut up. Not everyone possesses parenting skills that are on a par with you. You must learn to be more tolerant of those who weren't blessed with your intelligence and abilities.

And the baby oil and the REALLY soft brush work fine.

thank to all for your advice....sorry i'm such a horrible mother but after 9 months of never getting and now seeing first signs of it maybe you know who on this board should report me to child protective services HA! Thanks so much to all others....i'm trying the baby oil now :)

It's okay. Most babies got it. All 3 of mine did get a touch of it. My 2 year old still gets it occasionally. But I have an extremely dry scalp.

:huggy: You are NOT a horrible mother! Horrible mothers don't seek information to help them fix something that they think is wrong -- they just ignore the problem & don't care. Children don't come with an instruction manual attached! We all just do the best we can. Good for you for reaching out & seeking information! Enjoy that little baby! They grow up way too quick!

The best advice I ever got about cradle cap came from my mom...
Just a dab of Head & Shoulders non-medicated, I think the pink bottle works the best.

It cleared it up in 2 days!

My mom showed me how to prevent it using above method and only had to deal with a mild case with one of my kids. His hair was thick and I was afraid to mess with the area directly over the soft spot so I had her do it.
Years ago, one of my aunts said she caught her cat licking it off one of her kids! Kitty was doing a good job so she let her finish- YUCK! LOL!

Some of us weren't so lucky.
