Is it better than Inner Harbor or Annapolis waterfront? I'm always looking for daytrips or weekend getaways, and I never think of DC for that for some reason.

It's more expensive than the others by a long shot. I like the others better.

It's fun to say you've done it before, but there's not a whole lot to do. If you wanted to really enjoy your time there, I suggest a breakfast segway tour that starts off at NH and ends in Alexandria. Way cool!!

Hubby and I spent the weekend in DC and we toured Smithsonian's Air & Space and Natural History museums. Sooo much fun, but waaaay crowded. I bought some astronaut ice cream. Last time I had that stuff I was in elementary school.

See, and I've been to the Smithsonians a zillion times, which is why I never think of DC for a weekend - been there, done that. Plus I like to be by the water.

I would like to see the Newseum, though.

Since it's only about an hour away, I thought maybe this week I'd take off and go explore during the day, while everyone else is at work and it won't be so crowded.

Annapolis or IH hands down over NH in every category. Just so we are clear-here are the categories that Naptown and IH excel in over NH:

- waterfront experience much nicer
- restaurant choices-ability to find reasonably priced but good food
- history
- scenery
- other things to do besides eat
- not in PG county

But did you do lunch at the National Air and Space Boston Market??

We go to DC we always do lunch there.

And how do you get the Segway across the Wilson Bridge to get to Alexandria??

Museum of American History was just finished last summer (it was closed last time we went up), and the Space and Air museum was just renovated within the last 3 years or so. Lot of the same stuff, but a bunch of new stuff too.

Many of the museums I have no interest in, but I ALWAYS like the American History Museum.. Prudhomme's Dragster, the top of the Washington Monurment, the cutaway of the Golden Gate bridge main suspension lines..

That and we got to witness the Great Polar Bear Caper.

Another great place to visit while in DC

Took my kids across the Memorial Bridge to Arlington National Cemetery this past weekend--they had never been. In all honesty, without saying much to them while we were there, they left educated. They got it.

You can walk, bike, segway, across the WWB nowdays via a special lane.

Would like to bike across the WWB bridge one day - where can I bike to once I get to the VA side? Would I be better off jumping on the metro with the bike and heading to the mall/monuments/memorials to bike instead?

The Spy Museum (DC) is a lot of fun too!

Went there about 2 months ago - the kid really enjoyed it!

Once you cross the WWB, if you have it in you you can go through Old Town and hop on the Mt. Vernon Bike trail and either ride south to Mt. Vernon or North past National Airport and back into DC.

I'd say it's different, just as Annapolis is different from the Inner Harbour. I would also say it's not completely developed. Was up there in the winter for the ICE exhibit.
I would look into a package deal from one of the hotels for a getaway weekend. Water taxi to Mt Vernon and Old Town Alexandria.
