There has been civil unrest there since to 1970's.. long before these children were born. I'm aware of this first hand.

So they have intentions to seek asylum by some heading to family's homes and two heading to Canada??
.. Certainly with children that were involved with robotics at least one of them would have simply " Googled " the reasons and process to seek asylum in the USA.
And followed that process in that manner.
The US, I'm sure is going through all correspondence between the kids, family and adults involved with the robotics trip.
I'm sure there plenty of emails to fully understand why this was done.
