Or to make it easier to understand intuitively, if a geo metro and a hummer H3 are both traveling at 50mph (assuming the metro can go 50mph) and run head on into each other, do you think the H3 would feel the force of running into a brick wall at 100mph? If they were purely additive (that is to say, the absolute value of their vector force was purely additive), that's what would happen. But as their force are in opposite directions, it happens exactly as MMDad states.
