Its been a while, but I always would:

1) Download and install latest version of malware bytes
2) Update to latest malware bytes malware definitions
3) Reboot into safe mode
4) Perform full system scan

I'm not sure if its still always required, but I'd have better chances of success by doing step 3 which not everyone does.

I run a full scan using MalwareBytes whenever things seem to be slowing down. I've switched to Microsoft Security Essentials to run full time. AVG missed some malware and AVAST was too cumbersome and clunky for me.
