Ben Carson admits fabricating West Point scholarship

"Ben Carson’s campaign on Friday admitted, in a response to an inquiry from POLITICO, that a central point in his inspirational personal story was fabricated: his application and acceptance into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The academy has occupied a central place in Carson’s tale for years. According to a story told in Carson’s book, “Gifted Hands,” the then-17 year old was introduced in 1969 to Gen. William Westmoreland, who had just ended his command of U.S. forces in Vietnam, and the two dined together. That meeting, according to Carson’s telling, was followed by a “full scholarship” to the military academy.

West Point, however, has no record of Carson applying, much less being extended admission. “In 1969, those who would have completed the entire process would have received their acceptance letters from the Army Adjutant General,” said Theresa Brinkerhoff,a spokeswoman for the academy.

She said West Point has no records that indicate Carson even began the application process. “If he chose to pursue (the application process) then we would have records indicating such,” she said.

When presented with this evidence, Carson’s campaign conceded the story was false.

“Dr. Carson was the top ROTC student in the City of Detroit,” campaign manager Barry Bennett wrote in an email to POLITICO. “In that role he was invited to meet General Westmoreland. He believes it was at a banquet. He can’t remember with specificity their brief conversation but it centered around Dr. Carson’s performance as ROTC City Executive Officer.” ".....

lol! Ben Carson = Con Man

Disappointing to read.

How did Obama get into Columbia from Occidental? And how did he get into Harvard Law? Who's going to find his academic records?

Hit the Brakes on the Ben Carson Story

It is looking more and more like the details of Ben Carson’s West Point story are more nuanced.

In 2013, he said he was offered a scholarship to West Point. The Politico story centers on Carson claiming he “applied and was accepted.”

It is true, Carson never applied and was never accepted to West Point.

The Politico’s representation of that is demonstrably false and is not something Carson claimed.

However, Carson has said several times he was offered a scholarship to West Point. That also appears to be not true, but Carson has some wiggle room here.

Carson says this came up in a meeting with General Westmoreland. It is possible that Carson simply misunderstood Westmoreland.

Here is this in the Politico story from Carson’s campaign manager:

“He was introduced to folks from West Point by his ROTC Supervisors,” Bennett added. “They told him they could help him get an appointment based on his grades and performance in ROTC. He considered it but in the end did not seek admission.”
Carson could have taken that as “offered a scholarship,” which is not the case, but he could have interpreted that way.

In other words, Carson has more wiggle room on this story than the Politico suggested and Carson’s book does not claim he “applied and was accepted” to West Point.

Since when do you get offered "scholarships" the the service academies?

I'm sure certain people get told "you will be accepted if you apply" due to political, family connections etc. I don't get why someone so accomplished needs to exaggerate though and am disappointed.

One thing I don't get though is why someone at the service academy went digging through the records to release that statement, isn't that information private? I would be a bit upset if Harvard announced that I wasn't accepted with my moderately above average high school achievements and no possibly of paying the costs myself.

Our PoSoTUS turned over ALL his transcripts. Why shouldn't Carson's be made public, too?

Not saying he shouldnt, what I am saying is a government employee used their official position to engage in political activities that they are barred from and violated the Hatch Act.

Why would someone dig into the records.

Because he is republican. Like Sam said , no one dug into Obama's college records. They still haven't.
And yes the Birth certificate is a fake too.

It is a de facto scholarship since it takes care of all the financials. Generally you don't have to pay back scholarships, but graduates of the academies incur a service commitment (no less than 5 years).

Yep. Competition was rather fierce for the full-ride NROTC scholarship I won in '76. A "step down" from an academy appointment, to be sure, but the same deal financially.
