Charles Co Dept of Ed has lost it's mind?

It sounds to me that the parents did not have the documentation necessary to support their argument that Westlake was the appropriate placement for Logan.

In my experience from dealing with school systems in MD (92-94), VA (94-99), FL (99-05)& back to MD (05-Present) they DO consider your wishes, your opinions & expertise as parents. They will consider documentation which provides information to back up your request. If you have documentation from doctors & specialists to back up your request - you can make reasonable arguments. In my experience, most LEA's (local education agency or school system) really do have the child's best interest at heart & all the information on the table is weighed. Delivery of services is not always in the exact manner a parent would like. That is just the way it is.

I've "won some" and "lost some", as they say. Most recently I lost some issues I was trying to press for in regard to my son's IEP here in Calvert County when he first started HS. But even when you "lose some" - my son didn't "lose". The school system is just not delivering the services in the manner I thought the best. And guess what - he's doing fine.

That's what I hope happens in their case - I hope they find that Logan adjusts perfectly and they all find out that Stone is actually the right place for him both socially and in terms of services. I know we all think we know best when it comes to our kids, but sometimes, we get bogged down watching the road for potholes, that we lose sight of the destination.

Man, I kind of feel duped. When I saw the moms Facebook page I was all about supporting her. Now that I've read this thread and gotten some facts, all I can say is..... :/

And what school are they trying to send him too? :jameo:

Not sure. I am not familiar with where each SpEd program is in what Chas. Co. school. I think it's Thomas Stone.

I was all about supporting her, too. But people on her FB page were admonished or removed from commenting on Logan's situation unless they were in 100% support. You cannot form an educated opinion based on facts without the facts - and the mother chose not to supply those facts. You can only form an opinion based on emotions, which is all she really wanted.

I can understand the need for privacy in these matters -but SHE made this VERY public. Creating a FB page geared towards ginning up support for his cause, without providing details - that's manipulation and dishonest. Going on every news channel that would interview you, and posting on intrawebz forums to garner support, (without the facts) doesn't fly. Once the mom felt the heat of actual questions and reasonable comments from people who truly did want to support her - she left.

North Point. But by the looks of the FB page, they're still fighting it.

There are a lot worse places/schools he could go to than North Point, IMO. And for all intents & purposes, it's not all that much further away than the home school, for crying out loud.

North Point are you kidding me?! This is what they've been complaining about? The two schools are a mile apart as the crow flies. The way it sounded they were sending him into some God-forsaken wasteland miles from home! She placed such an emphasis on the extra commute time, it makes me wonder what the REAL issue is.

Has anyone considered that he might have a girlfriend who'll be going to the home school?

Yep. It could sure explain why they're so set on sending him to a school with all his current friends.

I seriously doubt that has one iota of bearing on the situation. Really.
