I was talking to a buddy of mine this weekend and told him I've been noticing a little bit of a slow down on my internet speeds. He said he had noticed a slowdown at his house also and came to the conclusion (after some consultation with an IT guy) that the slowness was coming from his router.

I ran speedtest a couple of times throughout the day yesterday... 2.8 mbps down and 1.57 up. (I pay for 15 down/1 up)

Hard to say how long this has been dragging ass like this, so I called metrocast this afternoon and after a remote reset on the modem and then bypassing my Cisco router we found that the router was KILLING my speed. The direct wire speed was 10.6 down (still too slow) and remained at 1.57 up.

The tech support guy said that given the usage in my area, I should be pulling every bit of 15 down. So it looks like a new router may be in my future, but for all you metrocast haters out there, just to let you know I was on hold for approximately 45 seconds and we did the troubleshooting, narrowed down the problem and scheduled a service call for tomorrow in less than 10 minutes.

So you are doing a secondary access point in your house? How does that work out for you?

Yes.. works great.. You just have to set it to same SSID and different channel. The wireless device hops to the one with the best signal..

Metrocast just finished up with the service call.
1) Modem replaced
2) New coax from wall to modem
3) New connectors from attic to office

10.8 down on a 10 year old Mac
16.7 down on the 3 year old laptop

New router may not be needed it looks like, just have to wait for Mr. Call of Duty to come home and give it a whirl.

Good to hear.. My sis in law has similar problems, her modem is quite old. may have it replaced to see what that does..

There is always faster though.. ;)

What service speed are you paying for?
Do you have fiber to your house?
General location?

Metrocast's highest Tier.. You have to have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and you're good to go.. Its a little pricey 69 bucks a month, all I have is cable modem, TV is DirectTV.

to answer Dowhat's Query - I am on FiOS 35/35 ...

Lets not compare the city to the country... nice speeds but I live in the sticks.. I don't get my neighbors car wet when I wash mine.. :)

If you are only getting 3.9 up, you need to go to the modem web interface (http://192.168.100.1/cmConfig.htm) and do a 'reset all defaults' - Once it comes back up, do one more reboot. You should see a 1-2 Mbit improvement:
