Headless Deer

Whoever hit that deer should of stopped and helped save the deer, then this would never of happened.

How would you "help save the deer?". Last I heard the EMS/Rescue Squads around here don't make veterinary runs. Also, under Maryland law it is illegal to rehab deer.

Although most of the meat will be ruined from the impact there are usually some cuts that can be salvaged. Just because it was hit doesn't render it unusable.

There are some unethical hunters out there. Most likely egged on by the tv shows. Most of the deer shot on tv are donated.

What would be the cutoff date when you wouldn't eat the deer anymore? the head is going to be salvageable for some time past that.

Oh yes, I'm sure someone dumped it there. :sarcasm: It's more likely that the deer was hit late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, since this is when they usually travel. If this is the case, perhaps the DRIVER THAT HIT THE DEER took the antlers/deer head as a small compensation for the extensive damage that was undoubtedly done to his vehicle. He could have quickly done this with no one seeing if it was late at night or early in the morning. I like how some touchy-feely wom...er...people let their emotions get in the way and jump to conclusions and are ready to crucify without knowing the facts.

Agree. The animal is already dead, so what does it really matter. My daughter had a dead one in front of her house, took almost a week before it was removed. Not pleasant to see in it's deteriorating state, so we just stopped gawking at it.

It probably didn't smell too good after a week, either.

Jerks that have to cut heads and antlers and lie

Someone hit a dear and it landed in my driveway. Later I see a car parked at the end of my driveway. I drive up to ask what's up. The guy says he wants to get a tag for the deer and is waiting for the sheriff to come to file a report so he can remove it. I bought the story and said good, I don’t want it sitting in my driveway and went back to the house. The next morning when I took my kids to the bus stop there was the dear – with the head cut off lying in my driveway. He didn’t even move it to the side. Worthless IMHO. It was also not pleasant for the kids or for me to clean up.

I have heard several people say they stop and cut the head off of a dead deer. I never understood it. Why would you want the head of a deer you didn't kill? Could be that someone hit it and someone else came by and snatched the head.

No doubt some of the illegals coming across our borders are headhunters from Central Mexico. If you see any tiny deer heads showing up at roadside stands or gift shops you will know for sure.

If it was a buck hit by a vehicle, you can't eat the meat as the bladder and other internals contaminate on impact.

Doesn't make it right that they just left the body on the side of the road, but I'm offering an explanation as to why it wasn't picked up for meat.

Not always true. I was notified of a road kill on base last year. Went and picked it up, had it at my house within an hour of it being hit and salvaged about 35 pounds of very good meat off of it. Yummy, yummy back straps.
