I enjoy using the kiosk at Wawa and Sheetz, but I have to wonder how much it would really save the restaurant.

If it's just for order taking, then it maybe makes one or two people out of the crew redundant, so that is some savings. But I assume they still need someone who can take the occasional order for those who are blind/can't read/can't make sense of technology invented after 1940. And that person may have to be pulled from the line, which will just slow things down.

So, I look forward to a more streamlined process, but I feel the savings are more likely to be had once they can replace the burger flipper, not the order taker.

I went to Olive Garden the other day. First time in a while. They have a machine on the table that you have to run your card thru to pay for your meal.

Been seeing those "pay at your table" machines a lot more in the last couple years. I don't think they are saving on labor much though...unless you count the steps a server has to take to go run your card and come back to the table again.

You can, if you use the "call server" button on the kiosk and have the server come over. The mini-kiosks in Red Robin, Olive Garden, et all, were more designed to allow a customer to finish their meal cash out quick and depart without having to wait for the server to serve your bill take your card, disappear, return, wait for your signature..... They also allow you to place certain, but not all, food and drink orders without having to wait for the server.

I pay the server everytime, every restaurant. If anybody asks why, I simply say I'm helping you keep your job. Do the same thing at stores - use a cashier rather than self check out, and almost always go inside a bank if opened rather than the ATM. I have yet to find a clerk/cashier/teller that does not appreciate it. I have no problem telling management the same thing.

I use the automated check-out at SAFEWAY because it's a union shop.

That is a valid point that I did not consider, seeing that FL is a right to work state that carries over to all aspects of employment, both private and public.

That right there is the model we should have. They do it in Japan and I found it very convenient. No more 1 server for every 5 tables (or whatever), hovering over you at times and never to be seen at times. Just give us a button and let us hit it when we need drinks. Hell, if we have the touchscreen give me a "refill drinks" button and a "need service" button and save a trip back and forth.

Add a tube out the back and they could even dispense the drinks right then and there. Could have a "make it a double" radio button on the screen too...

I wonder how that would work here - I wonder if Japanese culture is too polite to bother the server unless it's necessary. I can easily see Americans abusing a system every time the ketchup bottle doesn't work right, or they need an extra napkin - instead of telling the server five things, just call her five times.

I think it was more the other way around, they don't appreciate the server hovering over the table or making small talk. Actually I have found most places I visit do not appreciate wait staff acting like you are long lost cousins that need to catch up before ordering.

In any case, it might be abused. But it's not like the light is enforced, if you are hitting it every 15 seconds the wait staff may just ignore you (and you may tip bad because of it, but such is life).

Years ago, I talked with a software designer, and he mentioned a problem they had with a device/program designed for in-flight movies on individual screens.
Among other problems was the need for flight attendants to verify EVERY purchase individually, traipsing up and down the aisle for every movie and show purchased.
Every one had their own screen and every person had to purchase with a CREDIT CARD. Needless to say due to horrible design, the flight attendants found they spent the entire flight
going up and down the aisle constantly.

Until they very clearly sabotaged the system by cutting the cable to the screens. Now the travelers had a screen in front of them - but it didn't work.

Some designs are well intended but they don't account for how the user will USE them.
