Key Bridge Collapses

Happened at 1 AM in the morning. Just think of how many would have died if it had gotten hit at rush hour.
I wouldn't want to be in that pilot's position. This is a good advertisement for tunnels under the river instead of bridges over it.

I believe it was under control by harbor pilots.

Doesn't matter, unless there was a major mechanical difficulty someone is going to be held responsible.
I assume the ship was under the control of the pilot I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.
Not his fault.

He got pulled into Diversity Training at the last minute.

Video shows lose of power resulting in loss of control.

They are also reporting a concrete repair crew was on a night shift assignment. 😭

Very frightening. Worse than the Bay Bridge collapse due to the Loma Prieta quake.

What kind of overreaction will our illustrious government take because of this accident? Will all traffic on bridges now be stopped when a ship is about to pass under it? Will 2 pilots and 3 tugs be required to escort all ships under bridges? Will McDonalds be required to hire more transpeople to flip burgers? The possibilities of new laws are endless with this accident - Patriot act 24.1??

It's Maryland.

There'll be a new emergency Bridge Tax passed.

Raising the Maryland Income Tax from 5% + 3% to 5% + 3% + 10% to pay for a new Baltimore Bridge.

Of course there'll also be costly Evironmental Impact Studies to be had for both the removal of the steel in the water and then a new bridge.

Wife said that since this is the route for hazardous materials - they would not be allowed by law to use a tunnel.
Without the bridge the detour is a couple dozen miles or more.

I do know years ago, when I was on Royal Caribbean, we BARELY made it under the Key Bridge. Of course, it will always make it under, but it's pretty close.

Maybe a new design will be a draw bridge?

Is that what it takes to get a new Solomons bridge?

The best harbor Pilot of all time cannot control a 95,000 ton, near 1000 foot long ship without all systems functioning. Hopefully it was mechanical failure, and nothing more sinister.
Would any drawbridge you have ever seen survive that impact?

Thinking COST, not surviving a collision. Making a very high bridge is costly.

That may be the answer, I don't know the numbers, but the 95 corridor will be F'd for a long time. How long did it take them to replace the Harry Nice?
