My son said it was probably just deciding whether or not to expend the effort to eat him. Said he felt ice cold fear.

I'm pretty sure if they attack you are supposed to slap them on the nose and say bad bear.

Actually, he got a 44mag. Calls it his bear swatter. Since they can hit 35mph he better be fast and accurate. I told him to get a 22 and always have someone along that he doesn't care for............... lol

The oldest saying in the book, when hiking with a friend. I don't have to be faster than the bear, just have to be faster than you.

http://www.wbal.com/article/107093/3/maryland-ranks-as-one-of-the-worst-states-to-spend-retirement

We are also in the Top Ten of the worst places to spend retirement and to complete the hat trick we are in the top 10 of being the most taxed.

It's easy to mismanage other peoples money.

We are also the top 10 in household income and we were voted one of the better places to live in the US. I absolutely don't like everything O'Malley is doing and I think some of the bright ideas that come out of his office are down right stupid and greedy but I love this place. Even though locally it has grown and is loosing its rural feel it is still a nice place to live with low crime, good jobs, and just enough activity to keep someone interested. As for Maryland as a whole we have our cities, we have our ocean front, we have the mountains for hiking and skiing, we will soon have a world class casino, etc.... As for threats MD only has 1 city (Baltimore) in the top 100 most dangerous, we have the occasional tornado but most of them are week, we have only had 1 noticeable earthquake in the last 30 years, Hurricanes are usually less than a category 1 when they hit us, etc... I know there are many other states that offer the same things as MD and I can't say that I will retire here because it is too far off but my parents retired from there jobs on the base here and they are both living comfortably.

The property taxes alone can prevent people from retiring here. This area is meant for actively working people unless they have enough retirement income to stick around. The utilities also are much higher here. We have relatives in PA that can't believe that for a 1,000 SF house that utilities can average $200-300 a month. They think their electric bill is high if it goes over $50.
Property taxes in Pa are just as bad as Maryland.

That's just it..nothing. Businesses and individuals are headed out in record numbers.
:yeahthat:
I was born and raised here. Most of family is here. Love being near the water. I was going to wait about 10-12 yrs. before leaving but I'm seriously looking at King George for the short term and Delaware to retire.

I guess I'll have to go to WVA and live with the rednecks (I use this term fondly) and the bears :cds:
Born and raised in Pa. My brothers still live there, but I won't retire there. Too cold is probably the only reason. Moving south to North Carolina. Property taxes OK, they don't tax my retirement, homes are less expensive, warmer and their gun laws are much better than effing Maryland.

Unless things change drastically for the better for me financially in the coming years, I'll have to move somewhere rather remote to able to afford a place to live if I ever am able to retire (not looking like that will ever happen at this point). It is my desire to transition at some point from working a regular job to doing rescue full time. I can cover my living expenses with the limited retirement pay I will get as long as social security doesn't collapse, but I will still need to fund-raise for money to care for the critters. If I can find a property large enough in the future, I hope to add space for retired horses that have no where to go. We'll see.

COMHOMEFLEET and I don't mind the cold so we're thinking about New Hampshire. We were looking at WV, but in some ways they are not much different than MD. Some things I read say they tax military retired pay higher than MD.

Do not move to King George. Totally sucks! No murders, less rude people, good gun laws, taxes are half....beware.

Property taxes in Pa are just as bad as Maryland.

At least you know where that money goes. The majority of your real estate tax bill is for the local school district, and you can feel free to vote the school board out.
Township you live in gets the next biggest chunk, not anything like the schools. The county portion is minor. And that's it.
School taxes really went up when the teachers were allowed to not only unionize but go out on strike.

Income tax is lower and the sales tax is not as broad.

For retirees you get to exclude a nice portion of your annuity from the state income tax and SS is not taxed.

That's why it's actually a retiree friendly state - weather might suck, but they don't take much of a bite out of your pension.

Now, if you want really bad real estate taxes, move to the Garden State. New Jersey has had some of the highest real estate taxes in the nation.
NJ introduced the state income tax not to fund the general budget, but as the revenue to fund the homestead rebate program.
The state tried to equalize the real estate tax burden by issuing rebate checks to homeowners in communities with higher real estate taxes,
Talk about redistribution of wealth.
