We were marveling at @Gilligan 's new boat and motor, came across this. Pure Science. Advance to 10:40. If you can get past the pretty girl.


Nice buoys! Or are those more correctly called "navigational beacons"?


I've always wanted a triple-expansion steam engine like the one in that video

Maybe the mike didn't pick it up well, but that was the quietest steam engine I've heard. So smooth.
That's one of the neat things about a triple-expansion engine like that. The steam is "used" three times before it is exhausted...leaving little energy and pressure in it when its finally released. Nathaniel G. Herreshoff perfected the design of those back in the 1800s..

At the Lundeberg school we had the Dauntless. She had a big triple expansion steam engine, really cool. It has since been converted with a diesel and is still in service hull # 578 Great Lakes Engineering Works built in 1921.
