"President Obama on Tuesday remembered the late University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt as a trailblazer who helped lead a revolution in women’s sports.
Obama noted that Summitt “became a role model to millions of Americans” by leaving her post as the winningest coach in college basketball — both women’s and men’s — while graduating every single player who completed their eligibility.
“Her legacy, however, is measured much more by the generations of young women and men who admired Pat’s intense competitiveness and character, and as a result found in themselves the confidence to practice hard, play harder, and live with courage on and off the court,” the president said in a statement.
“As Pat once said in recalling her achievements, ‘What I see are not the numbers. I see their faces."
Summitt, 64, died early Tuesday morning due to complications from early onset Alzheimer’s Disease, which forced her early retirement in 2011.
The president lauded her as an “inspiring fighter” who dedicated the final years of her life to raising awareness about the devastating brain disease.".....>
