How did you hear? I just checked the websites, and nothing's there...
St. Mary's website gave no indication that they were closed today, so I'm guessing that updating the website has either been a problem or a low priority.

WTOP is saying that Calvert Co schools are closed tomorrow (Wed)

Dear CCPS Community,

I hope you are all well and getting life straightened out after Irene. I had hoped we would be able to open school on Wednesday, but after hearing all of the information from across the county, I am choosing to keep school closed for one more day. I think we will be able to open schools on Thursday but that will be announced Wednesday afternoon. While many homes in the community have had their electrical service restored, as of 2:20 this afternoon there are still 13,284 Calvert County residences in the dark (BGE 3,576 & SMECO 10,294). One school is completely without power and another just lost power after having it restored yesterday. Several schools still have phone and internet issues.

The biggest issue we continue to face as a school system is the transportation of students. Our buses travel over 17,000 miles each day. The combination of low hanging power lines, stumps and trees on the edges of roads, and blocked and closed roads create too many hazards for us to safely operate the buses.

The county government, utility companies and private residents have done a tremendous job of cleaning up Calvert County since Sunday. One more day should allow them the time they need to significantly reduce the risk to students, parents, bus drivers and citizens. Another announcement will be sent out tomorrow afternoon regarding school on Thursday.

Take care and be safe,

Jack Smith, Ph.D.

Calvert County Public Schools will be opening on time September 1, 2011.

Dear CCPS Community,

I hope this message finds everyone doing better as each day passes. Even though we, as a community, are not at 100%, it seems that having school tomorrow is the best option for the community as a whole.

It is important to keep in mind:

Beach Elementary School may not be able to open. Beach Elementary School families should watch the television, listen to the radio, check the website, or check for an email early tomorrow morning if the status of the school has not been previously announced.

Most roads are cleared to an acceptable level at this point but not all. In some places, bus routes may not be fully passable. Therefore, the buses may not get to every stop on the route. Families who are sending their children to school in the morning may encounter hazards on roads, bus delays, and traffic backups. Please use extreme caution and allow additional time to get to bus stops and school buildings.

All absences for Thursday and Friday of this week that are documented by families as Hurricane Irene-related will be excused and will NOT count against perfect attendance for this school year.

Many families still do not have power and some have experienced a great disruption to their lives because of the damage to their homes, cars and other property. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Take care,

Jack Smith

St. Mary's County Public Schools will open on time, Thursday, September 1st. Please review your child's bus stop and plan accordingly if it is compromised due to storm damage. Buses will alter the routes and stops as necessary. All student absences for Thursday and Friday will be coded as lawful, in consideration of those families without the resources to contact the school.
