I'm glad I'm past that stage in life. I asked my F-I-L even though it wasn't necessary. It's a show of respect that seems the world has forgotten. They can **** off!

As many times as I've been married, I wored out the question...

I asked Anita before we told our parents.
They were expecting it.
Our friends at college were surprised we did not get married over the summer.

To me, it's not so much permission, but will we accept him. Because if the bride to be is close to her family, her future husband needs to be also. I also believe it's a respect thing. Most couples have already discussed marriage before they are actually engaged so it's more for the guy to show that he cares about her enough to care about how her family feels.
