Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) monitors weather reports for threats of inclement weather that may affect the operating schedule of the school system. Staff collaborate with other local and state agencies to monitor reports and conditions. If weather conditions pose a potential hazard, school officials may delay the opening of schools or close schools for the day. Such decisions are usually made by 5 a.m. When possible, decisions are made the preceding evening.

Maurice J. McDonough High School returned to the It’s Academic winner’s circle Nov. 30 at the end of the regional competition. This is the second consecutive year the Rams have taken first place in the local competition. The on-stage team was made up of Julie Perriello, a sophomore and team captain, and seniors Jean Hughes and Skylar Belisle. The team scored 280 points to secure the top spot.

A fourth-grade student is selected through an essay contest to represent the school system and Charles County at the celebration. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) will celebrate the graduating high school Class of 2023 during seven ceremonies at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf. Set for May 30 through June 2, ceremonies will take place outdoors in partnership with Regency Furniture Stadium, Charles County Government and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its 2022 Middle School Archery Tournament on Nov. 18 at Milton M. Somers Middle School. Archers from five of the county’s seven public middle schools participated, divided by grade level into boy and girl teams. The top boy and girl archer by grade were recognized, as well as teams overall.

The new Board of Education of Charles County will be sworn-in starting at 6 p.m., Monday, Dec. 19 at St. Charles High School in Waldorf. The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is leasing one of its buildings to Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) starting Jan. 1, 2023. CCPS will soon utilize CSM’s former St. Charles Children’s Learning Center (CLC) to expand prekindergarten program offerings. Use of the facility by CCPS will begin with the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

As Thanksgiving approaches, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) staff members at the Jesse L. Starkey Building are providing food for families in need. A service opportunity disguised as a friendly competition among various departments in the building provided a total of 15,091 food items and monetary gifts for community members in need. Each food item brought in, or dollar donated earned one point for the team.

Charles Co. SHAPE MD names Mitchell's Margolis as Elementary School Physical Education Teacher of the Year
A recent afternoon at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School found third graders in an intense game of battleship as their physical education (PE) teacher, Marty Margolis, observed — and at times joined in. Rather than focusing on the game board, two teams set up on either side of a barrier made of mats. Then they let loose a barrage of dodge balls in hopes of toppling the five oversized bowling pins (still draped in ghost costumes from Halloween) strategically placed on the other side...
The Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Monday, Nov. 28 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. for the annual legislative breakfast. The breakfast is a time for the Board of Education and Charles County’s legislative delegation to share information, concerns and educational issues before the Maryland General Assembly convenes in January.
