Charles Co. North Point’s Amira Abujuma sworn in as Student Board member, will work with new student leaders this Fall
Amira Abujuma, a rising North Point High School senior, was sworn in by Sharon “Sherrie” Hancock, clerk of the circuit court at the June 27 work session as the new Student Member of the Board of Education for the 2022-23 school year.
Abujuma’s term is effective July 1. Student Board Members serve one-year terms.

The Board of Education of Charles County on June 14 approved tuition rates for the 2022-2023 school year that include an increase for students enrolling outside of Charles County, and for non-Maryland residents. For students residing in Maryland but who live outside of Charles County, the cost for the coming school year is $9,720. This is an 8 percent increase from the current school year.

Charles Co. La Plata sophomore pens original music composition — Joins CCPS students for national ACT-SO competition
A lot of kids like listening to music, Isaiah DeLeonard likes composing it. The rising sophomore at La Plata High School spent nearly six months penning and arranging his first full composition “War March.” Written for a full orchestra, the composition was inspired by one created by Mark Lortz, a composer and music arranger.

It was years in the making and will take a while to bloom but the bird and butterfly garden at J.C. Parks Elementary School was officially opened June 13. Situated at the front of the school, the garden was dedicated to Deanna Wheeler, the school’s science teacher who was instrumental in making Parks a forerunner in green-centric programs.
