‘Juneteenth’ Should Not Be A Federal Holiday

The keening over Juneteenth just boggles my mind. Are we really that effing retarded that we'll bitch about a federal commemoration of the end of slavery in this country??
But June 19th (Juneteenth) wasn't when slavery officially ended. It wasn't until 6 December 1865 when the 13th Amendment (passed by Congress on 31 January 1865) was ratified and became law of the land. June 19th was when Union troops arrived in Galveston to enforce General Order #3 (the tenets of the Emancipation Proclomation that freed only those slaves in states rebelling against the Union).

So, at least for me, the celebration/holiday should commemorate either the passing of the amendment, its ratification or maybe even the date of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclomation. Hell, it could be three holidays all unto itself.

So maybe it is and they chose to commemorate it on June 19. Who cares?

Juneteenth has been a thing for at least 3 decades because I remember doing PSAs for it when I worked at Tester in the late 80s. This isn't something new they made up yesterday.

Isn't that a better name for Black Friday?

No. It is a British custom that people would give poor people gifts. It turned into a free day off for Britain (and its Empire) and a day to return gifts and use gift cards. So you are sorta correct.

I agree. Although Sept 22nd or Jan 31st may make more sense, Jun 19th is the day Blacks chose to celebrate.

It has been known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, in reality it is for Galveston "when we found out day".

Call it anything you like and celebrate it any way you wish, but in the present political climate it should be called Pander day because that is what is happening. Politicians pandering to and playing the racial Pander Card.

Like reparations, if they are ever passed it still will not satisfy the din'ndonuffins.

Did you guys enjoy the fireworks to celebrate Black Independence Day last night? Charles County must have put on quite a display in Waldorf last night. I couldn't see them for the trees, but I started hearing them about 9:30 pm until 11:30 pm. Some sounded suspiciously like gunfire, but we have laws against that! Right?:sshrug:
