11 month old and car trips

I'm debating our summer vacation for next year. My son will be 11 months around that time. How well (or bad ) do you think an 11 month old would do on a 10-11 hour car trip? We'd stop frequently for the restroom, eat, and stretching.

Do you think it is a crazy idea?

No... go for it :yay:

The way back though will seem tougher than the way there. At least it has been in my experience.

How is he in the car now? Multiply that by ten hours.

Mine slept, so a long trip was nothing too difficult.

Just build in plenty of time for feeding and diapers and it shouldn't be unbearable.

Probably will sleep most of the way. Better to do a long car trip before they can ask "are we there yet" every 5 minutes. Good luck.

My two step-sons do that constantly. Drives me INSANE. Thank God my hubby had a DVD system installed in my car for Mother's Day. They can play video games or watch a movie wearing wireless headphones and we can listen to the radio up front. It's been a big help!

We used to take ours everywhere when they were little. They both travelled well in the car (no car sickness). Like you said, frequent stops are good!

Well he's only 3 months old now. He has tummy troubles a lot and the carseat aggrevates that. So, he fusses until he spits up. Then he's fine.

My daughter was 9 months when we took her on a 10 hour road trip. We went through her whole bedtime routine and left for our trip when we would be putting her to sleep. We stopped half way and got a hotel room so my husband and I could get a couple hours sleep. Then got up early and left so that she would continue to sleep most of the way. The last 1 1/2 hours were brutle. I was in the backseat doing anything and everything to keep her entertained. Some kids do fine and others don't. You'll be able to judge once it gets closer to the time of your trip. Good Luck!

I took my 9 month old to North Carolina and we stopped a couple of times and the last hour to and from were horrible. And he is usually a kid that entertains himself pretty well. Good luck!

My whole family takes this trip together annually. We didn't go last year since I was 8 months pregnant. My mom makes their reservations between now and Christmas. Maybe we'll go ahead and make our reservations too and when the time gets closer, I can cancel if I need to.

Go for it, Speedy. You can't keep putting off family trips waiting for an opportune time as one will never come around. Each year brings a different obstacle.... straight on through their teen years.

My mom couldn't even take me to the store 5 minutes away without the car sickness medicine. I was horrible in the car. Not as bad now but have to look straight ahead the whole time. Can't help with maps or anything or else "the feeling" starts coming on. Normally I drive if I go on long trips with people. Helps with the sickness feeling and the upset stomach feeling.

I'm the same way. I either have to drive or be in the front seat. Can't read or look down at all. Oh, and I'm in bad shape if I get stuck behind a diesel truck. The fumes alone are enough to get me started. It's not as bad in Hubby's Durango as in a regular car. Maybe because it sits so high up off the ground?

My Sweetest Boy
We never gave it a thought. We just packed 'em up and went. I took the babies just about everywhere we went. The youngest spent the first two years of his life on a ballfield.

It depends on the child. I was VERY lucky -- my son always fell asleep as soon as we took off and was a pleasure to travel with. Still does and he's 14 years old!

LIke a few others have mentioned. I've traveled alone with small ones in tow, since they all sat rear facing. My hub won't travel unless mandatory.
I never gave it another thought. Personally I don't want a DVD/game thing in my car. Kids can look out the windows and read road signs, play games "how many red cars to do you see? " I've always packed a small cooler of sippee cups or juice boxes/snacks if you're traveling on off peak feeding times. i'm an early bird so I get up before the kids, get myself together, round up the troops and get them pottied, and shoes on - i let em travel in pj's- they're little. we get to Nj before lunch so they have the rest of the day to play and see their grandparents. This is my plan for Thanksgiving Thursday AM.

Keep your cell phone car adapter in your car...
Happy safe travels:popcorn:

I drove both of my kids to Missouri (which is about 13 hour drive) by myself a couple years ago. Both did fine and I only stopped for gas and potty breaks. I packed up a cooler and had plenty of snacks.

Either way, we're going somewhere. But I'd really like to go to the Smokies. I love the mountains. We'll probably go for it. We'll also probably rent a cabin instead of getting a hotel room. I feel we'll have more space that way, and the people next door won't have to listen to a crying baby. :lmao:

I rented a cabin up in the Smokies a few years ago. It's beautiful up there and having the cabin made it that much better because you can sit on the porch and look at the view.

My parents have been going for nearly 20 years (sometimes more than once a year). They've always stayed at a hotel, usually the Vacation Lodge in Pigeon Forge. When I started going with them, I always got a room next to them. This would be my first time renting a cabin there. I want to get a nice one, I guess we should start saving now.

Unless your child is already a nightmare in cars, I'd say go for it. Both of my kids often took drives down to Florida. They did very well on them. I made sure to have PLENTY to entertain them. Rest stops were play areas- give your son the time to run around the grassy areas at the rest stops and let him burn some energy.
