12.21.2012: End of Days?

Will the Earth burn up in 2012?

NASA predicts that a terrific solar storm will hit the earth in 2012 which will be 30-50 percent greater than anything before. (Remember 1989? This is supposed to be worse - Andy) I believe that there has been global warming over the past decades but it is related to sunspot activity on the sun not carbon dioxide emissions. The sun has gotten hotter and that has affected the earth. A massive solar blast from the sun in 2012 could burn up the earth as could a collision with an asteroid or a comet.

Mayan Apocalypse, 2012 (Great Moments in Science, ABC Science)

First, when a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 - or good-ol' 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas.

And the second problem is that it is always remarkably difficult to make predictions, especially about the future, and things that haven't happened yet.

But, History Channel notes that the Mayan calendar has been surprisingly accurate throughout the years.

The polar shift, which is very possible, is going to be the most interesting thing. If it happens, that would change life as we know it.

No matter what happens in 2012, it sure is going to be a very interesting year...

I don't think the world will end, but I DO think the poles will shift.

Even if that doesn't happen, the Solar Storm will be bad enough. Aurora's will probably be seen worldwide and there will be massive blackouts. NASA says it'll be 30-50% more spectacular than any before it.

If that happens, it may not be the end of the world, but can you imagine the havoc that would be caused if the poles shifted?

How much technology relies on magnetic north being a constant? Would satellites and electronic gizmos be able to function with earth's magnetic field in a state of flux?

And the instant change in weather patterns that would take place.

One word: CATASTROPHE.

:yeahthat: ESPECIALLY prophecies that have been scary accurate on a great many things.

I know what you mean. I think I'm putting off Christmass shopping in 2012. I mean, there's no reason to go broke if we are all gonna be dead on the 21st. :huggy:

The Mayan calendar aligned with our Gregorian calendar shows an end date of 12-21-2012... but it is not a one-for-one day alignment.

Most researchers now agree and calculate the real end of the Mayan calendar to be Julian day 584,283 -or- August 11, 3114 BC

Either way - I'm with Kain... good excuse for a party!
