1975 disappearance of the Lyon sisters

Surely you jest ...
I remember it well and every time a I hear a child disappeared their story is the first thing I think of. So long ago yet I swear it seems like just yesterday. *sigh*
This and the Junior Burdinski story are two I remember although I'm sure there were more in the area.

I hope they finally solve it. So many unanswered questions, it truly was a 'without a trace' type case.

The Burdinski case lead to a search and seizure warrant in my dad's neighborhood. Although they found the guy to have nothing to do with the boy disappearing, they did find child pornography. In fact, many people ended up getting child pornography charges after that happened but none were considered "persons of interest."

I think the Burdinski case and the Lyons girls are not linked. In fact, they thought they had a killer for Burdinski at one point but he died in prison and never gave investigators the information they were looking for....

What is tragic is the parents have had to live life without ever finding their bodies.

I was very surprised to see the Lyons girl back in the headlines after so long without a word. I really hope they are able to solve the mystery once and for all.

I remember it too. I think it was the first time we had ever heard of missing kids.

Oh, I don't think they're linked either. Just the two I remember most vivid. Not sure about the guy in prison (Juniors case) though. I always felt they didn't connect the dots well enough with proof and used him to close the case so to speak.

my wife was talking about this last night ... she was living in Silver Spring at the time, her and her class mates remember it well - because ofter the disappearance, they all lost the ability to 'free roam' as parents locked down their children

being very involved with "l'il Junior", I can tell you the answer lies within the palacial mansion of the Burdinski family's possession at the time...

John Lyon, the girls father, was a well respected radio host on WMAL...Very sad events.

So he was a person of interest back then but he wasn't identified until recently?

Like all things of importance in any crime, I think what led them to him will be released only as the police see fit. Little mistakes in the releasing of evidence to the public/media can take a sound case and turn it into a mistrial in a heartbeat. Its been to long of a road traveled to get here to mess it up now.

While I am soooo curious. If it means a conviction, I'm willing to wait on the deep details.

I didn't read he was person of interest back then. A cold case squad is working on it now. It is amazing what they can do.

Wait and see what they show and tell, is all one can do.

They said a composite sketch was released so I figured the man in the sketch was a person of interest but since he seemed to roam a lot, no one could i.d. him.

Montgomery County PD's Facebook page....
Today at 10:00 a.m. in Thaxton, Virginia, Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown, Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Krantz, Montgomery County Police Department- Major Crimes Lieutenant Sean Gagen, and Virginia State Police briefed the media on the ongoing investigation of the Lyon sisters' disappearance.

Lyon Sisters' Investigation Press Conference Summary:

As in the past, particular pieces of information and evidence have surfaced that dictate certain criminal investigation procedures be deployed in the area to increase the possibility of a successful conclusion in this case.

The efforts today are spearheaded by the FBI's Evidence Recovery Team (ERT), headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. The team is here to process certain locations on the mountain that have become a location of interest.

Today, the investigation is concentrating on specific areas on the mountain that the ERT unit will process through a 'forensic dig,' and examination of specimens gathered through this 'dig.'

The investigation has included the efforts of the task force of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, the Montgomery County Police Department, the Bedford County Commonwealth Attorney's Office, and Virginia State Police. Many individuals and institutions have stepped forward to assist law enforcement in the effort.

The investigative work of this task force, regardless of the outcome of today's efforts, will be as tenacious as humanly possible with the target of locating these children and providing the parents closure.
