guns? GUNS? GUNS?
What the hell are they doing leaving multiple guns accessible to children? You all know me, I am a total gun rights proponent, but along with ownership comes RESPONSIBILITY! Can I please have 30 minutes alone with the gun owner please? Soundproof room and a Presidential Pardon in advance please. TIA>

The short answer is it doesn't. A two-year old wouldn't have the finger strength to pull the trigger on a double-action pistol. The only way a child that small could fire the gun would be to have the gun facing them and pushing the trigger, which would have meant the gun would have to be immobile, and the four-year old would have had to be lying with her face on the ground behind the two-year old... not a likely scenario.

What might have happened was the two-year old was holding the pistol with a finger on the trigger, and the four-year old tried to yank the pistol away, but even then I don't think the two-year old would have the finger strength to keep a finger on the trigger while it was being pulled.

This is one of those stories that you're not getting the whole story on, and probably won't.

The problem is that a lot of gun owners have been shamed into treating their guns like the porn stash... keep it hidden and never let the kids see it. There's always talk about political correctness, but few people notice how the PC police have effected gun owners. It used to be that guns were prominantly displayed in a home and parents taught their kids forearm safety and took them shooting, but then PC required people to be ashamed of having guns, and instead of a gun owner proudly showing off their guns it became only proper to haide them and say "Yes I have guns, but I keep them locked up in a fireproof box and in a gunsafe, and the nearest ammo is stored in a safety deposit box at the bank! I don't let my kids know I even have a gun!" But as we all know... we always found the Playboys and we usually found everything else our parents thought were so well hidden. I've always kept my guns out in the open, in racks, and one is always kept loaded. I've also taken my kids shooting since they were able to hold a gun. I also made them take the guns down and clean them, so I was able to de-mystify them.

Parents like these think they are doing their kids a favor by not letting them learn about guns. Instead the kids find them, as kids always do, and don't know anything about them aside from what they've seen on TV, and the result is they play with them like toys... with the usual result.

I cannot believe you keep a gun loaded around children. I teach my kids about guns and my husband has some, but we would never be so bold as to think it would be safe to keep a loaded gun around them.

I have to agree with Bru's approach. My kids know where every loaded gun is, wherever we go. The mystique about them has been taken away due to the exposure they've both had. I'm more concerned about my kids being around their grandfather's power tools than his loaded guns. :shrug:
