I wasn't going to plant any veggies, but my neighbor had extra tomatoes, gave me a couple plants. Putting them in pots, and a lot of gardeners say to put sardines in the soil just under the plant. I knew it was a mistake as soon as I opened the can. *gack* Smells like a fish that died on the shoreline covered in slimy dead seaweed and left in the sun for 6 weeks. I cannot fathom anyone eating this. Washed my hands 3 times and I can still smell it.

I fully expect the pots to be dug up by critters by morning.

It easier to use egg shells. Just smash some up and put a bit in the hole before you put in the tomato plant.

I remember using fish emulsion for some of my houseplants. Smelled terrible but worked wonders. I had LOTS of houseplants. lol

Sistard is having to fight off a groundhog that keeps coming up on her deck to attack her plants.

I only maintain an herb garden, with some jalapeno pepper plants thrown in. Parsley, sage, rosemary, .............oregano (sorry...no thyme..now that I've already inserted that earworm in to your head). And chives...love my fresh chives.

Me to. I cut the bulb off and stick it in a glass until it's well rooted, then into a cup of potting soil. Grows all year long, just cut off what you need. Starting a new batch now.

I wasn't going to try any gardening this year, but the neighbor gave me a couple of tomatoes. I put them in large pots in the backyard and they were doing great, bushy, full, just starting to flower.

Deer ate them down to the stem last night. :banghead:
Sister had to fence off part of her because a dang groundhog kept getting to her plants. It's working, so far.

We planted about 20 tomato plants one year, big and healthy. Came home one evening and all but one were eaten to the ground. Saw the deer running away as we pulled up.

Last year the deer ate a lot of the native plants in my yard. In addition to trying to help out the pollinators (there are so few this year!), I love cut flower arrangements. The only plants untouched were in pots on my porch.

I bought some really foul smelling stuff to spray on the plants and used a vege peeler to cut up some Irish Spring and distributed it around them.

Last fall, no acorns fell from the numerous oaks on my property so logic tells me they are very hungry.

Went to our garden yesterday evening and saw that a groundhog, or 2 or 3, had eaten every bean plant. There were 4 beautiful rows of them. I think the electric fence is not working because deer have been getting into the corn, also.
