As noted, not a lot. But every second buys a better chance to live. Knowing beforehand that catastrophe is imminent helps hugely with dealing with it. Changing the angle of impact just slightly can make a huge difference in how bad things are. Killing forward speed, and changing attitude so you dont hit nose first leading the aircraft to do an endo, which is really bad in a machine with rapdily spinning top parts. Setting it down on it's belly, especially a big fat belly like a -53 has, very good. The trained human brain an perform miracles with very little time to work with.
