5 Reasons The GOP Should Commit ‘Suicide’

"Republicans are in search of an excuse to do nothing about immigration reform and leave 11 million undocumented workers toiling in the shadows.

The centrist excuse for doing nothing comes from The New York Times‘ Ross Douthat, who points out that immigration remains a low priority for voters, even Latino voters. Providing any form of legalization that allows some of those 11 million to work is essentially “amnesty,” which would be bad for wages and the job market. Even worse — it would divide the GOP and “hand President Obama a policy victory at a time when he looks like a lame duck, and demoralize the right along the way.”

The more bald-faced and craven argument comes from Ann Coulter. Her argument boils down to: Why should people who won’t vote for us be given rights?

And it’s echoed by right-wing firebrands like TownHall’s Kurt Schlichter, who calls reform a “suicide pact.”

Coulter cites statistics that show Latino and Asian voters tend to favor “big government” policies and will help create a permanent Democratic majority. The subtext of this argument is: Because Republicans know we cannot win over voters with our policies, millions of people should live third-class lives.

Both of these arguments are concerned only with the well-being of the Republican Party — which is ironic given that the one piece of advice the party gave itself after Mitt Romney’s loss was to get immigration reform out of the way.

If the GOP is looking for the right time to implement immigration reform, it was 2007 — or last summer. But in both instances the party was being held captive by the same base that pushed for the government shutdown and has no interest in the kinds of policies that actually win national elections.

Here are five reasons the GOP should admit the border is more secure than it has been in decades and act now on immigration reform.

Or it can pin its hopes on voter suppression and other tactics that will hasten its long-term demise......

...

... or we could become "A Nation of Laws" and have a government that enforces our laws.

.... but if we had that, we wouldn't have 11 million illegal aliens toiling in the shadows. Make sure you thank Obama for ignoring laws that don't benefit him

For some reason granting citizenship to anybody that manages to walk across an unsecured border and then providing them with free education, medical, housing and food doesn't seem like a sustainable plan

Anyone with any brain at all knows that neither party, no President, no Congress is going to send 20 million illegal immigrants home. There will be some sort of Amnesty.
I believe this will be the third Amnesty, and still we will have to have a 4th. because we have opened our borders to anyone who can walk run crawl or swim.

Amnesty is no good as long as we do not close the border to those without legal immigrant standing. We must close down this illegal border crossing before we even think of amnesty. Then we need to figure a way to bring to a screeching halt those we deport from returning. Perhaps then we can see about those already here "Earning Citizenship"

Anyone who cannot earn citizenship by learning to speak English and doing the other requirements for citizenship needs to be sent back to where they came from. We do not need a permanent cadre of people living here who do not want to be Americans.

They could be gone in a month if the feds wanted them gone,

Stop paying them to come and live here and most of them will leave

It is not about Americans any more. It is about getting votes from non-Americans who have no intention to become true Americans. Disgusting.

What's a "true" American?

IMO, a "true" American is a patriot, believes in the Constitution, gets a lump in their throat when hearing the Star Spangled Banner, feels indebted to all military that has sacrificed to keep America free, works hard to pull their own weight, positively contributes to their community, has a sense of responsibility, exercises their right to vote, pays their taxes no matter how oppressive, speaks out if they don't agree with government, is tolerant until feeling infringed upon, speaks English in public (speaking one's ancestral language in private is fine), and being proud of the family roots that are the reason you are considered a true American today. If you don't have a sense of pride when thinking of America, then you are not a "true" American. Many have, are, and will attempt to take America away from us, but it is up to "true" Americans to keep that from happening. That is what I have for now, and hope it answers your question, LB.
