While I'm opposed to capital punishment, I've accepted it as a given in our society. Having accepted it, I am then forced to wonder why we go to such great lengths to make this punishment as costly and inefficient as possible.
You know, a shot in the head costs 1 bullet, and you can reuse the shell. As an added bonus to the sensitive types, the executionee is guarateed never to feel a thing, and it's so quick that they're dead before the sound of the shot (mere inches from their head) reaches their ear.
Quick - painless - cheap. Why don't we do this? You can hire a janitor to scoop up all the brains, skull pieces, hair, teeth and eyeballs and put them in a small bucket that can be thrown in a hole with the rest of the body, or burned with it.
Or they can do it the smart way and have some sort of receptical on the other side of the head which catches the tissue and debris for easy disposal.
Hell, a guillotine would be better. The only maintenance it would require is occasional sharpening, and lubing the grooveshafts. It is also very intimidating in appearance - so it might serve as a better deterrent than a lethal injection, which appears almost pleasant in comparison.
If they're totally set on using lethal injections - why bother with such a complex concoction of chemicals.... a syringe full of glass cleaner and lye right in the carotid artery just about oughtta do it. It would cost about 17 cents per execution, and they'd be just as dead, if not deader.
