No--at my club I'm the only one with a .50 BMG so I take it out a couple times a season for everyone to shoot. We typically shoot it at a metal "gong" which is a piece of hardened plate steel about 3" thick and two foot square. It is mounted on a pair of heavy truck coil springs. It works great for calibers like .30/06 and such but the second time we shot it with the .50 we had a round come back over our heads (the plate is downhill in a "hole" so the angle was well over our heads). We heard a nasty buzzing overhead and half the guys laughed and said, "COOOOOOOOOOL!" The club president and I looked at each other in horror and said, "Not cool--no more of this!"
Now we only shoot spotter/tracers as they completely obliterate on the plate. Oh, the 647 grain ball bullets would just crater it a bit but didn't penetrate more than about 1/2"--it is a massive piece of hard steel. Obviously we don't want to ruin the plate so I won't use any AP on it.
