I can beat that. The little Mom & Pop gas station near my house growing up had the chest-style cold water bath Coke vending machine. Bottles hung by their necks on a mechanism that opened on one end that allowed you to slide the bottle out.

Had to look that one up. Never encountered one of those.

Did the coin vending operate by allowing you to open the lid or allow a bottle to slide?

The vending mechanism allowed the bottle to slide out. You could always open the lid to see what was available before putting your coin in.

I remember using one of those at a resort in upstate NY when I was a kid. Didn't understand how to use it, and lost my nickel.

Indeed, I remember seeing these once or twice in the mid 1970's

Did the coin vending operate by allowing you to open the lid or allow a bottle to slide?
The bottles hung in the slots on the right. You slide your purchase to that slot on the far left and after inserting coins, pull bottle up and out.

Got you beat. Frank Morris Carryout had a machine on the porch at 45 cents per pack. Out of site from the kitchen where Ruth always was, with a cig hanging out of the corner of her mouth.
