A state delegate was one of the nastiest customers my restaurant has ever had

People quit working because the government was paying them $600 extra unemployment not to work. ANyone making less than $15 an hour was way ahead not working getting an extra $2,400 a month in sit at home money.

Just the extra cash kicker was more money than some people earned in a month by going to work 160 hours. This all but guaranteed that only the most faithful employees would still keep working.

When the options are going to work for a month and earning $1,600 or staying home getting unemployment plus an extra $2,400, it's really a no brainer. I always thought the people keeping the grocery store shelves stocked deserved to be paid 3X what they were making pre virus.

I doubt anyone would have judged you if you did. The feds made it too easy for people not to work. Especially those on the lower end of the pay scale.

My boss might have. That was enough incentive. He gave us the option. Not one of us decided to take the free money. We may not be very bright, but we're honest.

Anybody else ever have any terrible interactions with people who are supposed to represent us?

This happened a few years ago, during COVID shutdowns, but it’s been bothering me lately to see the guy is still in office. It was the peak of COVID shutdowns really, when stores were actually forcing us to stand 6 feet apart, toilet paper was hard to find, etc. We were doing takeout only, and I was the only takeout hostess because we were extremely short staffed. Many people quit because of COVID or found better jobs. I was working nearly 60 hours a week typically, alone. And business was still booming.

There was a day when the line was out the door onto the sidewalk and I was handling the walk in orders, online orders, doordash/Uber orders, and the phone orders. However, since it was one of me VS. 30 customers, I often had to answer the phone just to ask the caller to hold. With only one phone line, this means any callers trying to get through while the phone was on hold had to keep trying. And many did. But the priority was to clear out the in-person line, because we had a state-mandated occupancy limited due to covid and we generally wanted as few people inside as possible.

For context, this is not a fancy place. It’s a chicken wing shack basically.

In the middle of helping a guest order, a man comes in and bypasses the line, to come to the counter and scream at me (at the time, a small 20 year old girl. him, a meathead thicknecked older man towering over me). Belittling me, our business, etc in a rage because he had been trying to call in an order “for an hour” and “why can’t you do your job” etc etc.

I explain to him we are very busy, as is visible by the line leading outside. And I’m the only person working to take orders. And that he’s welcome to wait in that very long line to place an order like everyone else.

He realizes everyone in the restaurant is looking at him like the jerk he is, and to save face just quiets down and goes outside to the end of the line.

Later, I saw an ad with his face on it. He represents the district the restaurant is in. The ad said he’s fighting for workers rights. What a joke, when he can’t even treat an overextended worker half his age during a global crisis with any semblance of respect.

I told everyone I know in Charles County to never vote for him. ******* is still in his role though.

I note that we have only your word for this, no proof, and that the man hasn't been invited to give his side of the story. Since he was so prominent and memorable, of course you noted the time of day, order number, and what credit card type he used, so you'd have evidence of all this?

He was kind of a regular at our restaurant and had always acted self important before this anyway. Maybe he figured everyone knew who he was (they didn’t). The manager told me once he was someone prominent locally, but he didn’t know for what and I was not really politically involved either. I figured he owned a car dealership or something (because he always wore a suit) until I saw his campaign ads LOL.

Not surprised he’s hypocritical in other areas. Smh.

I left this out of the original post, but he was actually so nasty that a random guest came up to me afterward: apologized that I had to deal with people like him, and commending my ability to stay positive. He was so rude to me that strangers felt obligated to provide free therapy LOL. And people are voting for this guy.
